Forced removals, pepper spray, walk-outs and Zuma’s trade-mark giggle kicked off this year’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), creating national outrage …
Democratic Alliance MPs walked into the National Assembly chamber on Thursday night armed with black flags bearing the words “Remember the Esidimeni 94”.
The flags were referencing the deaths of at least 94 mentally ill patients who died after being transferred from the Life Esidimeni clinic to unlicensed facilities in Gauteng.
The DA’s Chief Whip John Steenhuisen stood up to request a moment of silence in honour of the 94 mentally ill patients from Esidimeni. However, Speaker, Baleka Mbethe said the appropriate time to discuss that matter would be next week during the debate on SONA. This caused much outrage on Twitter with South Africans saying this showed a complete lack of respect for those who had died. Mbethe also dismissed the EFF’s points saying the house could not go on heresay but worked in accordance with the rules.
EFF MPs shouted “Tsotsi”, the isiXhosa word for thief, as President Jacob Zuma entered the National Assembly chamber on Thursday, for his state of the nation address.
However, African National Congress MPs, who were in the majority, drowned out the opposition MPs chants by shouting ANC loudly.
Zuma ignored the EFF and shook the hands of MPs as he entered along with Speaker Baleka Mbete.
Mbete showed her usual lack of control and Malema and the EFF continued to disrupt proceedings until they were forcefully removed.
Zuma angered South Africans by displaying his trademark giggle as the EFF were violently escorted out of the building.
Violence erupted when Malema was removed by the ‘white shirts’
Violence erupted in the National Assembly when Parliament’s protection services (white shirts) were ordered to remove EFF leader Julius Malema.
Malema vowed that he would not approach the courts after members of his political party were forcefully removed from the joint sitting of Parliament for President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address.
