The Federal Government has faulted the claim by Professor Maduike Ezeibe for the discovery of a cure for HIV/AIDs. The discovery by Ezeibe, a researcher in Veterinary Medicine of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Abia State, was a fortnight ago announced by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Francis Otunta. But the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, told State House reporters on Wednesday that the research was carried out without any valid ethical approval. The minister said: "On the issue of HIV (cure claim), we are yet to get the final report from the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute for Medical Research. "But what is clear is that those activities were carried out without a valid ethical approval. As you might be aware, nobody is allowed to carry out any expedient or research on human beings without an ethical approval. "At the National Health Research Committees level, there is no evidence that this researcher sought and obtained ethical approval. Apart from violating the codes of best conduct for controlled experimental environments. The Professor never developed a cure for HIV/AIDS. What he designed were potentiates that could enhance the functions/effects of drugs administered to patients. |

SamuelAnyawu: Instant billionaire? Far from it. Apart from the fact that it would take roughly 3 years for the professor to secure a patent for his inventions, there are five stages involved in the discovery/ development of a drug. The time it takes to complete these stages could take 10-15 years. Clinical development being the third stage could last for 5-7 years and this stage takes/makes the greater length of the time because it involes human trials and one has to be very careful at this stage. But the professor never fully went through the stages and he is asking the FG to help him secure a patent, who is he trying to fool? |
