ABA—Soldiers of the 14 Brigade, Ohafia, have recovered 38 AK-47 rifles, a locally-made revolver and 16 live cartridges from one Uche in Aba. Police sources told Vanguard that soldiers of the Brigade arrested Uche at a checkpoint in the city and handed him over to the police. It was gathered that Uche, who lives in Aba, is suspected to be the ring leader of a notorious robbery gang that has been terrorising residents of Aba and environs. Other items recovered from the suspect include .9mm ammunition, one locally-made single-barrelled shotgun and nine SIM cards of various networks. Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, told Vanguard that the suspect had confessed to be the ring leader of a robbery gang that has been on a police wanted list and will soon be arraigned in court. He further disclosed that men of the Federal Highway Patrol, who were on stop-and-search duty along Opobo-Azumini highway, recovered 50 live cartridges from a bus conveying passengers to Akwa Ibom State. According to Oyebade, the ammunition were concealed in a carton of noodles. He said: “On sighting policemen, the suspect abandoned the bus and fled into the bush. When the bus was searched, the 50 live cartridges were discovered concealed in a carton of noodles.” |
