Acidosis:
This is one of those questions I hate to see online.

People should know that there isn't any standard salary structure out there. Even in the civil service, some states pay good salary, others pay low salary, some even owe 8-10 months salary.

Ask 100 graduate dentist and you'd discover that they all earn different salaries. Some will earn good salary because their employers know how much it cost to rent an apartment in the city; those who earn low salaries may actually have huge and fat bank account because some live in staff quarters, enjoy company buses and spend absolutely nothing on food, rent and transportation. Some companies even fund health bill, study leave and school fees for 1 or 2 children.

These questions are irrelevant. There's no single and all encompassing salary structure for any profession or trade in Nigeria.

Just aim high in whatever you love to do, strive and be steadfast. If your aim is the money, then start thinking about how to own a dental clinic after a few year practice.

Nobody will pay you more than you can offer. That's the secret.

Epic!

After all those years of school? That's less than half of what dentists charge for a root canal in the US. You have dentists making over $250,000 a year in the US. Now I see why our brightest flee the country.

You took the words straight out of my mouth

What's your basis for comparing the income of professionals in Nigeria with the income of professionals in the US?

Did you honestly expect dentists in Nigeria to earn what dentist in the US earn?

Soon you would make comparisons between the income of footballers in Nigeria with footballers in Europe.

except that most practice don't charge this much.. and the pay which is based on percentage may not add uo to much.
please tell me where you received your treatment.
I may end up sending my resume up there in the future.

I agree with you saying "it's based on %"

But these are the quotes I got. Garki Hospital, Abuja offered to do it 45k subsidized. UCH Ibadan 40k subsidized. I did it eventually in a private hospital in Kwara for the 95k I quoted. Xray cost which I didn't add was 13k.

I still stand on my point. Dentistry is lucrative once you establish / are in a 2-man biz.

On a price list I saw in another facility in Kwara, the cheapest procedure was 7k for uncomplicated extraction. some were up to 300k. And the place is even one of the cheapest and I estimate at least 20 patients daily. it's always full.

BUT as some people have advised, the OP shouldn't be all about money. Dentistry is so highly specialised that your patronage would likely be based on your skill level.

Why do you think I went to the most expensive outlet? A facial nerve was susceptible to damage if the procedure went wrong and once the dentist was the best, I didn't hesitate and didn't mind the price.

After a gruelling 4hrs+ of opening my mouth wide, the first thing I did was to shake his hand and marvel at his skill. I have visited plenty dentists to know...wink

I would also like to know your interest in knowing what a new doctor earns.

I'm tired of seeing nonsense like this.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with being motivated by money. Every ambitious person wants a good life which is funded by good money.
Most of the people who keep saying "passion" can't clearly define it if you ask them to.
Passion comes from different things such as the nature of the profession, the prestige that comes with it, the appearance of practitioners and of course the life it affords (MONEY).
People should stop making doctors feel guilty about asking for adequate remuneration for such valuable services.

undecided

The tuition fees alone for one year of dental school in the US will pay for 10 dental student's full program, living costs and pocket money for their full period of study in a Nigerian university.

I respect denstist because my mentor is one. Their leave comfortable life. It's easier for them in government because their salaries is equal to that of medical doctors. It tougher in the private sector because people generally don't care for their teeth. I have gone to see a doctor several times but only gone to see a dentist 3rice and in a government hospital. Don't choose dentistry because u want an easy way out because it's a demanding course.

Nairaland does not post much about dentistry because there are very few dental surgery students, and moreover, they're very busy medical students with a wholesome bulk of academic work. Now to your question. Dentists are surgeons hence medical doctors as well. They are doctors who take a different path (training in dentistry and medicine at once), hence paid same salary with other medical doctors in public service.

we do! In fact, i have a pre molar with a huge hole that's causing dis comfort for me. I think it needs extraction. Any idea how much this will cost me?
Re: How Much Is The Starting Salary Of A Dentist In Nigeria? by DrSuleiman100: 5:07pm On Apr 10, 2017
Some are saying Nigerians don't take care of their teeth, so dentists don't make money.....in fact, this is why dentists make more and more money. For example, when a tooth that's supposed to be filled or removed is left untreated, this is the type that usually progresses to dentoalveolar abscess or even Ludwig angina which is life threatening. And this requires a lot of more invasive procedures to treat plus or minus neck dissection which the patient have to pay for handsomely and in folds. In short, complications of minor dental cases cost more and more money....and that is the case in Nigeria.
