The Association of Educational Services and Cyber Café Operators (AESCCO) has written to the Senate protesting the policy by JAMB that Cyber cafe operators will not be allowed to register candidates for the 2017 UTME.

According to the letter which was Dated 6 March and signed Mr. Femi Aborisade, lawyer to AESCCO, the policy, announced by JAMB on its website, is discrimination against cyber cafés run by small and medium scale owners in favour of JAMB-accredited CBT centres owned by big- time businessmen.

“UTME applicants should be allowed to register for the examination from their individual computer units and/or those owned by their parents and guardians rather than be compelled to patronize CBT centres. Where some individual applicants do not have their own computer units, such applicants should be allowed to exercise the freedom to patronize either a CBT centre or the cyber cafés.” The letter stated.

While admitting that small scale cyber café owners may be involved in examination-related fraud, AESCCO argued that owners of big CBT centres are not exactly free of such dubious tendencies.

“If institutions of learning can conduct online registration for admission by applicants anywhere in the world, without limiting applicants to CBT centres, what is the peculiar difficulty of JAMB? If WAEC and NECO can successfully conduct registration for their examinations online without experiencing duplication and/or swapping of applicants’ data, why should the approach of JAMB be different,” asked AESCCO.

The body maintained that if this development is allowed, it will increase the current unemployment rate in Nigeria and asked the Nigerian Senate to take measures, including adopting a resolution to compel JAMB to execute its functions in line with constitutionally guaranteed rights.

Cybercafe isn't as lucrative as it was some years back...ever since the introduction of smart phone and cheap data took over.
Now the exam(s) registration that they are using to keep soul and body together is about to be taken away...

I swear, dis one weak me.

Cyber cafe owners openly admitted to their corrupt practices while also accusing JAMB CBTs (owned by big-wigs in government) of also engaging in corrupt practices.

Taking away this business from cyber cafes could mark the death and burial of that business enterprise all over the country and further increase the unemployment level.

However, there is no guarantee that the JAMB CBTs would not engage in their own crooked practices so I wld say until when Nigeria has been rid of corruption starting from our fantastically corrupt presidency, why don't we leave the cyber cafe owners (who are part of the small and medium scale business owners) to continue to enjoy patronage from prospective undergraduates seeking admission.

Senate, please investigate!

Just my own two kobo... cool

When it started from the time of Ojerinde , we complained of the intent to monopolise jamb. Now recession is making people speak up.
Still yet, The CBT centers uses it to extort cafe owners who can afford the huge price and still sell off the access code to the highest bidders.
Also the main runs is never in registration process , but during the exam itself. Some people that can afford the price would negotiate with the CBT center owners and they may not even have to write the exams , but finally get high scores.

Good Evxample of How technology makes people's life difficult.
In Developed countries, you would be able to register for such exam from your sitting room, but here in Nigeria , they would make students go through hell or even loose their lives in the process of registering ordinary exam. Talk of the queue in the cbt centers , resulting from their proceed of monopoly, they mostly failed to handle them and in turn students spending days or even weeks just to register an exam.

Is it not possible to issue permits or licences and keep records of the accredited cyber café operators so that where there's a complaint relating to fraud or any other form of bad practice by the café, they could shut the café down altogether.

What kind of irregularities do cybercafes even perpetuate.I was a cybercafe owner b4.wen we did d registration then we just excited to make money. The only comma then was multiple registration by candidates which was no fault of the cafe owners. The So called CBT centers are even worst off. They collect as high as 30k per candidates for high scores. To me dere is no wisdom in this JAMB policy.
