Where Exactly Is Ibeju Lekki?

Ibeju-Lekki is where you have The Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lekki Deep Seaport, Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Industry ($17Billion), Dangote Fertilizer Plant, Cargo Port, The ongoing 4th Mainland Bridge, Lekki International Airport, Lekki International Golf Course, Pan Atlantic University, Eleganza Industries and so on. Ibeju-Lekki is a local government area in the Epe Division of Lagos State, Nigeria. The administrative centre was formally at Akodo and was later moved to Igando Oloja due to the creation of Lekki Council Development Area. The name of the Local government was derived from two autonomous communities, Ibeju and Lekki.

The people of the area are mainly Yoruba speaking natives, there are many other people from different parts of the country and around the world residing, working and investing in the local government. The area also attracts massive amount of tourism as it is endowed with beautiful lagoon and gorgeous ocean fronts.

The development in the area is rapid and ongoing, some would even refer to the area as the New Lagos. in fact the commercial Hub of Lagos state is shifting towards the area with many investment been done to develop industries and infrastructures.

Ibeju- Lekki Local Government is one of the four created in Lagos State by Gen Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida in 1990, out of the old Epe Local Government, with headquarters at Akodo. However in October 2003, the then Executive Governor of Lagos State, H. E Bola Ahmed Tinubu, carved LEKKI LCDA out of IBEJU LEKKI LOCAL GOVERNMENT. This in turn necessitated the relocation of the headquarters from Akodo to Igando Oloja, its present site.

The name, Lekki is derived from the names of two autonomous communities, namely Ibeju-Agbe and Lekki. The local government is bounded by Eti-Osa East LCDA on the west, Epe on the East and the Atlantic Ocean on the North. Ibeju- Lekki is about 75km long and 20 km at its widest point and is spread over 646km2 or a quarter of the total land mass of Lagos state. Some of the major town in Ibeju-Lekki includes Ibeju-Agbe, Magbon-Alade, Iberikodo, Igando-Oloja, Aiyeteju, Awoyaya, Bogoje, Akodo, Elerangbe, Eleko, Elemoro, Idi-Orogbo, Lakowe, Orimedu, Abijo, Mopo-Ijebu Eputu and Badore.

Located along the coastal plain of Nigeria, Ibeju-Lekki has many creeks and Lagoons and its mainly populated by Ijebu speaking people of the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria.

The people of Ibeju Lekki pride themselves as being from “Igi-Meta” This can be gleened from their “Oriki” part of which reads thus:

‘……Omo onigi meta ijebu, ikan n so owo, ikan n so iyun, ikan n so alaari baba aso…..’

Ibeju Lekki indigenes are friendly and accommodating as can be seen in their peaceful co-existence with various other Yoruba and non-Yoruba speaking Nigerians and foreigners. Indigenes of Ibeju Lekki are mainly fishermen, who traverse the length and breadth of both Lagos Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean for different species of fishes, cray fish, prawn, lobsters and crabs. The resultant effect of this is that the woman smoke/grill the catches from their husbands net. Smoked fish is a local delicacy which has been exported and is popularly eaten with sour garri, a local derivative of cassava, usually produced by Ijebu woman. Indigenes of Ibeju Lekki also produce brooms, coconut oil and palm oil from the abundant coconut and palm trees that grow along the coastline.

The traditional institution of Authority which is still highly revered by the indigenes, is male dominated and patriarchal in nature. Leadership is vested in the Council of Obas and Chiefs, headed by the Onibeju, who is the chairman.

Historically, the Onibeju had been the administrative head of all communities that make up of the old Ibeju district, long before the incursion of the colonial masters. He has therefore maintained his chairmanship of the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Ibeju Lekki to date.
Ibeju Lekki is perhaps the fastest growing Local Government in Lagos State, because of the recent citing of the Export Free Trade Zone, which include both air and sea ports along its corridor by the Lagos State Government.

14. All the civil engineering is done by Nigerian companies.

15. The plant has an export value of $6 billion per annum, meaning Dangote’s efforts will increase the amount of foreign exchange in Nigeria’s foreign reserves by at least 40% of current value on a yearly basis.

16. Dangote said when this project comes on line, his friend Femi Otedola will save at least N26 per litre on millions of litres of diesel and petrol which his companies import annually. This savings will be passed on to the consumers and it will take a lot of pressure off the banks.

17. Billions of Naira were paid to acquire the land and to settle the existing communities. More money was also allocated and spent to relocate the existing communities.

18. This project will restore the dignity of Nigeria, a crude producing country that has for years gone abroad to meet its demand for refined products.

19. Refined products to be produced at the plant include but is not limited to propane, petrol, Jet Fuel, Diesel, Kerosene, Carbon Black, Polypropylene, Polyethylene.

20. The United States Trade and Development Agency is supporting this project with $997 million. Very massive project to stand in the Ibeju-Lekki axis come 2019.

LAWMAKERS LAUD LEKKI FREE TRADE ZONE PROJECT

Chairman Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Commerce and Industry Hon. Oladele Adekanye has commended the effort of the State Government in ensuring that Lagos State becomes a mega city, especially with the creation of Lekki free trade zone where investors would converge to embark on business activities in the state.

Adekanye gave the commendation when the Committee paid a visit to the multi-billion naira Lekki free trade zone in Lekki area of the state.

He praised Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu’s administration that conceived the lofty initiative to promote investment and improve revenue of the state through commerce and trade.

He said, “The wisdom of Asiwaju Tinubu who brought about this vision would not be allowed to die as the House of Assembly would work in hand with the executive arm of government to realize this laudable project.”

“The Committee has come here today as part of oversight function to assess the level of the project.”

The Committee, however, observed some of the challenges facing the project which include among others the absence of good quality; infrastructure, such as roads; electricity and promised that he would ensure that necessary action is taken by the supervising Ministry.
Contributing, member of the Committee, Hon Alimi Kazeem said when the project is completed, it would replicate Dubai master plan in Nigeria.

The General Manager Lekki Free Zone Development Company, Mr. Rotimi Ibrahim who took the Committee round the various industries location stated that the Lekki free zone is owned jointly by the Lagos State and Chinese company. He explained that the Lekki Free Zone is located on the top of Lekki peninsula, the South East of Lagos State and borders Lekki lagoon in the North while it faces the Atlantic ocean in the South with the beautiful coastline of about 5km stretch making it the fastest growing area in Nigeria. According to him, Lekki area will soon be developed into a modern industrial mega city in the Lagos metropolis.

At the Lekki port visited by the Committee, the Executive director Tolarem Port, Mr. John Mastorondes who received the committee said, “The port would be the biggest in West Africa upon completion as huge employment would be created from the port operation. He said approximately 20 billion US dollars will be invested on employee’s salaries.”

The Committee also visited Dangote refinery, Dangote dredging site, Lekki Free Zone, and Lekki worldwide investment limited.
