They both have sum adv and disadvantages, But i'l choose a manual, Why?1.You can jump start a manual Transm to start whilst u cant wiv an auto 2.You dnt feel sleepy in a manual wen travelling as ur left leg is kept busy changing gears as against an auto 3.Easier 2 maintain, Thats just my own opinion lets hear urs

Manual is the most practical, as it's virtually maintenance-free, which given Nigeria's mechanics, can only be a good thing.

Automatic cars are also thirstier in terms of fuel consumption, and heavier on front brake pads and discs too.

There are semi-automatics, and the later Tiptronics, which can be driven as conventional automatics, or clutchless manuals.

@sienna, Just googled it and i see that u are rite, Manumatic and semiautomatics transms are indeed arnd but gosh those will be very sensitive and impractical 2 use in naija, Imagine a roadside mechanic working on a semi automatic trans built on the concept of fuzzy logic it beats my imagination, I'l go wiv manual Trans

all the posters here, i don't think you've ever driven an automatic. how can you say a manual car is maintenance-free? how about the clutch plates that get burnt all the time? well, i have been driving an automatic for over eitght years now and never once have i needed to worry about changing clutch plates. i think the only maintenaince work i have carried out on my transmission in this lenght of time is changing out the transmission fluid and base plates. not that there was a problem i just felt they have served well and needed to go.
Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by calabaman(m): 2:50pm On Dec 21, 2009
Thats nt true man, I have been drivn my toyota for over 6 yrs and ave not once chngd the clutch plate,
Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by GeorgeD1(m): 3:11pm On Dec 21, 2009
well, maybe you've been expert enough to know not to depress the clutch pedal too hard. but try asking a learner how many clutch plates got bad before he finally got his driving skills then you'll know why automatic is better.

Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by Nobody: 8:05pm On Dec 21, 2009
Always preferred manual.

George, manuals are maintenance-free. The clutch does not constitute part of the transmission per se, clutches are prone to wear, just like brake linings / pads.

Automatics, on the other hand, have clutch bands inside the automatic valve chest.

Items prone to wear in automatics, or that need periodic attention:

Clutch bands.
Torque converter.
Pneumatic valves.
Valve chest.
ECU!
Planetary gearset.
Centrifugal governor.
Hydraulic pump.

The ECU in particular, if faulty, may often be outside the scope of most mechanics, and can result in heart-stopping bills, if the car is taken to a main dealer to troubleshoot.

Auto trans fluid (ATF) needs to be replaced periodically, as do the filters, and clutch bands, if they get burnt. Manual transmissions, on the other hand, are usually filled for life, and the gear oil doesn't need replacement.

Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by GeorgeD1(m): 10:24pm On Dec 22, 2009
disadvantages of manual transmission:

•Driving a car with manual transmission requires greater degree of skill and application, an inexperienced driver could have his hands full while driving as he has to multi task and concentrate on a lot of things simultaneously.
•While climbing up a hill, a car with automatic transmission always scores over the one with manual.
•In a manual transmission smooth and effective shifting of gears can only be guaranteed by an experienced driver.
•A car with manual transmission can't be disabled friendly as it requires a greater degree of control and maneuvering.

Go Manual

* Sometimes it pays to have more control over gears.
* To give you more control in tough climate conditions or when negotiating a steep curve.
* Cost, cost, cost. The mileage on your automatic transmission car will drop 10% compared to manual transmissions.
* Also, they'll probably be more expensive in the first place- $700 or so on average.

Go Automatic

* Generally this kind of transmission is easier to operate.
* There are only two pedals, so it's almost like driving a go-cart. In a traffic jam, this is a big plus.
* You'll have your left foot free and both hands on the wheel.
* Automatics are known to consume more fuel.

If your automatic breaks down, you'll need jumper cables to restart the engine. Otherwise have those towing company numbers handy.
But you can push the manual till it starts or for Nija, park it on the hill and run down in the morning grin cool
Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by calabaman(m): 6:29am On Dec 23, 2009
@fhemmy, nice contributn as far as am concerned its manual thats more practical forget the comfort of an automatic, if u are experiencd with a manual u dnt realy see the discomfort in its transm, And its very cost effective too, My advice is if u wanna get an auto let it be for sunday/outings use only and a manual for normal use, just a thought why dont transporters use automatic transmission vehicles?
Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by GeorgeD1(m): 10:26am On Dec 23, 2009
perhaps the biggest disadvantage of manuals should be the first on the list:

Driving a car with manual transmission requires greater degree of skill and application, an inexperienced driver could have his hands full while driving as he has to multi task and concentrate on a lot of things simultaneously

and it's little wonder why even for the most experienced drivers, you cannot rule out fatal accidents due to a little slip of concentration. it is the reason why in the usa, manuals are gradually being phased out.  for those in love with american specs, why do you think it is getting increasingly difficult to find manual transmissions for any particular model? name it, toyota, honda, chrysler, vw, etc? it is because research has shown that for any particular year, car crash statistics point accusing fingers at manual drive cars!

For a business man that has no driver, Auto is the best
Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by calabaman(m): 10:23pm On Dec 23, 2009
I beg to differ@fheemy, A bizman witout a drvr should use a manual, It pays 2 start off the day in a lil bit of stress (manual) in qoute, There by u are energizd for watever hassle the day may bring,
Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by Nobody: 8:59am On Dec 24, 2009
I really drive both but prefer driving auto as it selects d gear. Drivin manual needs greater skills as some do not know much of how to change gears. All d same I believe we all will rather swap to auto as manual are now scarce in 21st century cars. Regards d chang of discs n other mech faults once a cars has served u 4years its beta changed so u reduce such nasty stuffs.
Anyway I'll regard u as one who can't drive if u say u can't drive manual

Re: Automatic Or Manual Transmission- Which Is More Practical? by GeorgeD1(m): 7:27pm On Dec 24, 2009
i bet you also find it 'stressful' using a flash drive to save your files? the old fashioned disket should do you just fine. wake up man! automatics are the way to go! in another ten yrs you won't find any car maunufacturer doing manuals anymore! ever wondered why dell computers aren't including disket drives in their systems anymore? well, it's same reason why manuals are being phased out: they're past their time! cool

y'all should keep on driving the hard way. i only hope your manual drive cars lasts another 10yrs because when it comes time to change them out, you'll be surprised to find there just aren't any manual drives around anymore! and what a rude awakening that would be! grin
