@ Everybody I am a living witness I am currently in the Virginia state, USA studying Master in Software engineering I had HND in computer science from The Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti and I was exempted from taking any prerequisites which is 15 credit hour because I have already done them in my ND/HND whereas there are some university degree holders that were made to register prerequisites courses I even had a friend from Uganda who has a university degree from Uganda she cannot register any courses because of prerequisites. Moreso, I have just sent my results to WES for evaluation, I will give you the true standing of HND certificate in the United State.

On most serious note ND/HND has more quality than university Degree it may sound funny because I have friends who attended universities in Nigeria.
1 Polytechnic Education does not give room for secondary education revision while in the university system most courses done in the first three semesters are secondary school subjects like biology maths econs physics etc
http://csc.futa.edu.ng/courselist.php VS http://www.fedpolyado.edu.ng/images/download/2013%20FPA%20Prospectus.pdf page 76

check the course outline compare and contrast NOTE this is not limited to FUTA i am just using it as an example it applies to virtually all our universities in Nigeria

2 Most Polytechnic students (ND) that crossed to university to complete degree are often best students of that set they joined in 200 level

3 Polytechnic systems are practical oriented learning system while university systems pay little attention to practical

4. In Federal & state Civil service HND & Bsc are being placed on GL 08 ST 02

5 Well in the university you may found many doctors and professors but while in the polytechnics are limited doctors but mostly master's and first degree but in the real sense those universities Doctorate degree holders are they truely Doctorate holders, Yes! I can authoritatively tell you most of them are bagging doctorates via godfatherism, if their godfather who is a professor transfer from UNN to OAU they will also transfer while most polytechnic lecturers" qualifications are gotten thru hard-working because almost all polytechnics are not B Sc. awarding institution.

But if you are judging by context of how university and polytechnic were created you may be wrong or right
you may wrong if NUC & NBTE were created for chop-chop purposes or they really meant it but in my own opinion I assumed the formal purpose of creation

PASHA1:
HND is the worst qualification especially in engineering. You Think that you are an engineer, but you are not. You are not a technician as well becuase you are a bit higher in level. If you were Newton but with HND, then you are nothing. It is a respectless qualification. My best advice is to and study for a degree starting from zero. I have lost my hair because of HND.

This is a lie

Chegal: @GNwafor- Ok, I hate to burst ur bubble but why are u up here spreading lies. My sis went to the same school and a US university made her go all 4 years. An HND is not equivalent to a Bachelors, sorry. Its a only a certificate. A Bsc is equivalent to an Associates.

You are liar GN was right i did evaluation in WES same applies to me may be your sister presented fake documents

I have read with keen interest most of the comments in here and I find it very interesting, absolutely interesting. My brother is a graduate of Public Administration from IMT Enugu (2009) and he made Upper Credit 3.36, HND. He is currently applying for his MSc program in 2 Universities in Texas. One of the schools require transcript evaluation from Foreign Credentials Services America (FCSA). And this is from the 1st page of his transcript evaluation from FCSA:

Equivalence
Four years of undergraduate study in public administration, plus a one-year
non-credit practicum between years two and three
U.S. Semester Hours / GPA
Undergraduate 141 Hrs / 3.01
Credentials
1 U.S. equivalency Four years of undergraduate study in public
administration, plus a one-year practicum between
years two and three
Country Nigeria
Credential Higher National Diploma
Institution Institute of Management and Technology
Date awarded December 2009
Length of program 5 years, including two-year National Diploma and
one-year non-credit practicum
Documents viewed Photocopy of transcript and diplomas

And this is a note from the second page of his transcript

[b]NOTES
Between the two-year National Diploma and two-year Higher National Diploma, Mr ............ completed a
one-year industrial attachment (practicum) in 2006-07. While the Higher National Diploma represents
four years of study, it is an applied degree and not equivalent to the more theoretical bachelor's

And here is an email my brother got from one of the schools:

Good Morning, xxxxxxx!

We have received all the documentation you mentioned in your email; however, the FCSA evaluation does not indicate that you have a U.S. equivalent Bachelor’s Degree. As a result, you do not meet the requirements for graduate school and your application will not be forwarded to the program. If this is an error, please contact the FCSA.

Should you have any questions, please contact me.

Thank you.

Gerry Dimas
Graduate Admissions Specialist

And this is me writing now: It is absolutely an error for FCSA to append that comment on page 2 of my brother's evaluation even when they have CATEGORICALLY stated on page 1 that the HND is equivalent to a US Bachelor's degree.

Now this is what my brother is doing
1. He has applied to WES to do same transcript evaluation. I will post WES http://www.wes.org/ evaluation report here when he gets it
2. He has contacted FCSA and is asking for explanations and correction of the contradictory statement on page 2 of his Transcript
3. This particular school that requested for FCSA evaluation is now saying they can accept WES evaluation (which is even far far better and more recognized than FCSA)
NB: The reason why he used FCSA in the first place is because this graduate school wanted the evaluation from FCSA otherwise WES is the evaluation services of choice even though it is more expensive: $286 to have transcript evaluation sent to 2 schools.

Take 'aways' from my brother's experience so far:
1. Yes, HND is clearly equivalent to US Bachelors degree and this lends to what a few people have posted here.
2. HND students complete even more credits than Bachelors degree students in Nigeria, they do more academic work!
3. HND students are ABSOLUTELY qualified to apply for Msc programs in the US and I assume anywhere in the world! NB: Admission depends on a lot of factors.
4. Don't take NO for an answer. Always challenge the status quo, ask why, what and clearly present your own facts. DON'T LISTEN TO STREET TALKS, e dey spoil matter

Follow ups:
1. I will post here WES evaluation once it is ready
2. Just incase you are wondering, I am a FUTO Engineering graduate, got my MBA and 2 other degrees from US (I didn't need any transcript evaluations though and this was many yrs back shaa....mgbe enu bu nke nwa osa..... smiley )
NB: I will be watching this post for any questions I can chip in on.... wink
3. I hope this encourages a lot of people out there.......YOU ARE WELL WORTH MORE THAN YOU CAN EVEN IMAGINE, HND OR NOT!! BE DILIGENT AND FOLLOW THE LORD JESUS!!!
4. Here is my brother's FCSA Evaluation:

U.S. Equivalence
Four years of undergraduate study in public administration, plus a one-year
non-credit practicum between years two and three

Higher National Diploma represents four years of study, it is an applied degree and not
equivalent to the more theoretical bachelor's degree in Nigeria and the US. Credits have
been converted to US semester hours.

Fellow Friends;

Take Time to go through my reply about this thread:

Without mincing words, we cannot claim the ignorance of how the western world respect, honour, accept and revere our dignified Higher National Diploma. Our ND & HND certificate and curriculum is highly acceptable for higher degree admission. For most of the us who are myopic about the curriculum which we covered in our NBTE accredited National Diploma & Higher National Diploma program. It may surprise most of you who will read this thread to know that what you studied in your ND & HND curriculum is far higher than the required credit for a BS degree program.

My Story:

I studied ND & HND Chemical Engineering from IMT Enugu; and a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) Piping Design & Engineering from MIT Pune India. Believe it or leave it. I apply for credential evaluation to World Education Service (WES) - New York USA in June 16, 2012. WES requested for the Transcripts to be sent directly from the Issuing Institution from Nigeria & India respectively. The Indian School sent their directly and it was honoured. I complete the required documentation for student from Nigeria, but they request for further verification from IMT Enugu Nigeria. IMT Enugu Nigeria, replied to their letter together with another copy of my ND & HND Transcript in the last week of February 2013. Then WES promised me that my evaluation will be ready on 7th March 2013. I guessed because of the weekend, the Evaluation - Course By Course Report from WES actually came out on 11th March 2013.

You will be amazed with what am about to reveal to you from the NBTE accredited curriculum ND & HND Chemical Engineering from IMT Enugu Nigeria.

WES EVALUATION TERMS
Evaluation Scope: World Education Services (WES) evaluates only formal educational credentials. WES does not evaluate professional experience. WES evaluations are based upon the best information and resources available to professional evaluators. WES evaluations are offered as non-binding advisory opinions.
Accredited Institution: The status of a nationally recognized institution in another country is comparable to that of a regionally accredited institution in the United States.
Credential Authentication: Evaluations prepared by WES specify the manner in which each document was authenticated. The method used depends on what is appropriate for the specific country and level of education. WES authenticates academic records by one of the following methods.
• by requiring that official transcripts be sent to WES directly by the institutions or examination bodies that issued them;
OR
• by requiring that official transcripts be authenticated by the relevant government authority (e.g. Ministry of Education) before being sent directly to WES;
OR
• by verifying documents submitted by individuals by sending them back to the institutions/examination bodies that issued them and obtaining a written confirmation of their authenticity.
Detailed country-by-country document requirements can be viewed at www.wes.org/required/index.asp
Grades/ Quality Points: WES uses an alphabetic system to identify grades. The standard WES conversion of letter grades into a numerical scale/quality points is as follows: A = 4.00; A-=3.67; B+ = 3.33; B = 3.00; B- = 2.67; C+ = 2.33; C = 2.00; C- = 1.67; D+ = 1.33; D = 1.00; F = 0
• “F*” indicates a course that was failed initially, but passed on a subsequent attempt. It is not included in the GPA calculation.
• “Pass” is not included in the Cumulative Grade Point Average. For study completed at the undergraduate level, it corresponds to at least a “C” in the United States. For graduate and professional study, “Pass” corresponds to at least a “B”.
Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by multiplying the credits per course by the quality points for the grade for that course, repeating this procedure for each course, totaling the credit hour quality points thus obtained, and dividing by the total number of credits.
Course Level Designation: The designation “U” (upper) or “L” (lower) against a course at the undergraduate level is an indication of its level.
Credit Recognition and Transfer: The course-by-course analysis represents a breakdown of post-secondary study in terms of U.S. semester credits and grade equivalents. The number of credits accepted for transfer to a degree program or towards a professional license in the United States may vary from those listed in this report in accordance with the policies of the receiving educational institution or professional agency.
Evaluations for Professional Licensing/Certification: WES does not assess professional aptitude or experience. Only authorities qualified in the profession can determine whether an individual meets requirements for licensing or to practice the profession in the United States.

Matters Arising from the WES Evaluation:

In the US, a bachelors degree is completed in 4 years and as a BS degree student you are expected to earn/accumulate 120 credit points. But from my WES Evaluation, the combined years of studies for ND & HND is 5 years. From my ND & HND curriculum in Chemical Engineering from IMT Enugu, Nigeria, instead of accumulating just 120 credits, I earned/accumulated 184 credit. (Please bear in mind that in the USA, in an MS degree, you are expected to earn just 36 credits, which if you compare with my ND & HND curriculum, you can see that I earned extra 64 credit more than a BS degree).
Also, in IMT Enugu, my ND CGPA is 3.41/4.00; and HND CGPA is 3.40/4.00. From the overall WES evaluation, my overall CGPA is 3.76/4.00.

So from the foregoing, I think that with all the threads that I have read about HND & BSc dichotomy in Nigeria, I think that if you have graduated with a HND from a Polytechnic or Monotechnic, strive for a US degree, and save yourself of unnecessary anxiety and disrespect from our BS degree counterpart.

Presently, am preparing to apply for an online MS in Engineering from a Nationally accredited university in the USA.

Note: WES Evaluation has made more proud about my HND & ND in Chemical Engineering. I will be monitoring this thread to know your comments and provide further detailed information.

• by requiring that official transcripts be sent to WES directly by the institutions or examination bodies that issued them;
OR
• by requiring that official transcripts be authenticated by the relevant government authority (e.g. Ministry of Education) before being sent directly to WES;
OR
• by verifying documents submitted by individuals by sending them back to the institutions/examination bodies that issued them and obtaining a written confirmation of their authenticity.

This is really great. God bles u. But does the same thing applicable to HND management graduates who want to put in for masters degree? Moreso, what if i choose to go for B.sc after the evaution, is it possible? and will it take longer than a year to get the B.sc? I've got 3.02(upper credit). Thanks sir.

Geenona:

U.S. Equivalence

GNwafor:
Fellow Friends;

This is it:

Bro thanks for your useful information. I'm also an HND graduate and I have evaluated my transcript with ECE another evaluation body in the U.S. Now my question is...with they add up the grades of both N.D and HND together? Cause they did mine separate for both N.D and HND.

@GNwafor and for those that have done their HND evaluation thanks for your info,i must tell you I did mine with Education Credentials Evaluation in the US. And my N.D was equivalent to Associate Degree while HND was equivalent American Bachelors Degree. Do they add up both N.D and HND grades together to give a total grade? Cause in my own case they wrote both grades separately.

Hello everyone,
I have been going through this since 2009, asking questions about the equivalence of HND In US, this and that, but unfortunately I couldn't find a reliable answer, till February 2012, and I thought of sharing it cos I believe other are out there like I was before.

First I would like to start by saying. YES!!!! NIGERIAN HND IS EQUIVALENT TO A US BACHELOR DEGREE. Am sure of what am saying because my HND transcripts (that's both my ND & HND) were evaluated as an American bachelors degree.

I would also like to tell you that working or getting admitted into American colleges is based on American qualifications and grades, so to work or get admission into American colleges, first try and get your certificate, diploma, degree or whatever you hold into American equivalence, and you can do that by sending your transcripts to one of the evaluation agencies, WES (world Education Services) http://www.wes.org/ is accepted by almost all American colleges but you can still find out more at http://www.naces.org/members.htm

For more guidelines on how to get to admission into American College with a HND a brother has helped out on his blog, and you can check it out here http://www.farooqkperogi.com/2009/12/hnd-and-american-universities.html and http://www.farooqkperogi.com/2009/03/looking-at-american-education-with_382.html

I would like to share my experience: I graduated with a HND in Electronics Engineering in 2009 from a Nigerian Federal Polytechnic, and sent my transcript to World Education Services WES on October 2011, I paid $202 for the service, the evaluation is supposed to be completed in 7days once all my documents are received, but we all know our 9ja na, considering the fact that the country was in crises it took me 3months to get my transcript to WES, again early JAN 2012 WES sent back another copy to FED POLY, for verification, and at the time our beloved nation is on strike due to subsidy matter and boko haram wahala, till 1st feb 2012, that's when WES got a feed back and my application became complete, on 8th Feb, 2012, my evaluation was complete.

I graduate in Nigeria with 3.14 out of 4.0 CGPA, which is of course our Upper Credit as we call it. But to my surprise from the evaluation my GPA was high to 3.56 out 4.0, that is based on the American System, moreover, in US they use a system of Credit Hours to determine your qualification, and in other to have a US bachelor degree, you must at-least have a minimum of 120 Credit Hours, but from my evaluation I had 135 Credit Hours, which is almost more-than that of the US. And as am typing this I have already applied to one of the top 15 engineering and technology university in the world for my masters program with a HND, and they have assured me that I would get it, after all am having a 3.56 GPA, and a good GRE score (GRE is an exams u sit for before applying for most graduate programs in US, its just like GMAT).
But still there are some few things you should be aware of, just because your transcripts are equivalent to a US degree, doesn't mean you will not take undergraduate courses, yes you will automatically be enrolled to a masters degree, as far as you meet the requirements, but there are some certain courses that you must take which of course are undergraduate courses, and the reason is because those courses are expected by all American graduates and in other to be one, you must go through it, such courses are like those related to the American policies, government, etc. (I haven't reached that stage, am just telling you based on what the school I applied for feed me too).

So to all those who keep asking, what is the equivalence of HND in US, its equivalent to a BACHELOR DEGREE smiley but you really need to make good grades in your HND before you have something of worth, because I don't think there is any American University that would give you masters program with a minimum of 3.0GPA, U might get a provisional admission with a minimum of 2.5GPA (This is based on my reasoning, and what I have been going through, so just look out, cos I might be wrong)

If you need any proof regarding this, or guidelines don't hesitate to tell me or reply me, I promise i would help if I can, cos few years ago, I was once in the same point.

Cheers!
Please, I also have HND in physics/Electronics(upper Credit) with CGPA of 3.8 out of 5.0. I am also interested in doing my Masters in one of the top Universities in US. Do I also need to send my transcript to SWE or I should just look for any university that is ready to absorb me with my HND? Besides, is it a must for me to write that GRE exam before I could be admitted? Lastly, the SSCE I'm currently using is NECO, can i apply with it without doing any A Level exam? An early response shall be highly appreciated. Thnks.

Has anyone done certificate evaluation recently (in the last 2 months) and his/her HND certificate was evaluated to Bachelor's Degree in USA? If 'yes', please let me know which evaluating company used.
The US immigration denied me I-94 (TN work permit) this week because the officer was not convinced my 2 diplomas (OND and HND) should be equivalent to BSc (I had been using this same evaluation result for 10 years before now). He wants me to re-evaluate with a member of NACES body which has WES and ECE as members because there is a directive last year that makes my evaluation result no longer acceptable and the company that did the evaluation in 2007 is not a member of NACES. I graduated with HND (Lower Credit) in Civil Engineering from The Polytechnic Ibadan in 1991.

Hello bro! Jst stumbled on your write up now. I must say a big thank you for the enlightenment coupled with the fact that we studied the same course, qualification and almost the same grade too. But i have some enquiries to make.
1. How did you get to apply and take the GRE exam? What are its procedure? What were the questions all about and how do i source for reading materials?
2. When you applied for your masters in the US, was it GRE that sent the school your details having confirmed and scrutinize your transcript? Or was there any document GRE sent to you which you used in applying with?
3. Is it possible for me to apply for scholarship for my Masters degree with HND? Cos what i have been seeing is first degree with 2:1. I am yet to lay hold on any scholarship with HND as part of its requirement.
4. Are you studying there presently or done with your studies? Will be glad to have your reply ASAP. My email is hamzajatto@gmail.com. Will love to have yours as well if possible.
Thanks...

@Jimnet, All hope is not lost.

I always advice people, go for the best the first time, no matter the cost, it pays. WES is a founding member of NACES in 1987. Hence, they know the length and breadth of evaluation. Also, USA Government supports and backs NACES.

Two parts of the coin;

If you are based in USA, then you need to apply for WES Credential Evaluation [I even did the one WES called ICAP - which means that your credential (Transcript + ND & HND Certificate) will be stored for life, any employer/educational institute that needs it, you only pay them $10 and they will forward to the employer/educational institute anytime]. So I presume that you are in the USA - then apply and pay for Course by Course Report + ICAP; then, send photocopies of your HND & ND Certificate photocopy to WES (either by their Courier address or Postal Address - you will see it at the "International Transcript Request Form" - attached) Is posted below. Thereafter, you will need to contact your school Ibadan Poly - http://www.polyibadan.edu.ng/index.html. Preferably, if a relative can help you process the Transcript, that will be better.

Very Important: For transcript, WES has "International Transcript Request Form" I have attached it for you or you download at: https://www.wes.org/required/international_transcript_request.pdf

Part A of the form is for you, fill it correctly with you Reg No. and other details, then submit together with the Transcript fees to Poly Ibadan and request that whoever is authorized to sign Transcript at Poly Ibadan must also fill Part B of the Form and Sign & Stamp and send it together with the Transcript directly to WES. I will suggest you tell your school to use the Courier service - FEDEX or DHL, this will be factored into the cost of the Transcript. Once you do all these, immediately WES receives your application, application fees paid online with debit/credit card, photocopy of ND & HND Certificate - make sure you write your Reference Number on all documents you are sending to them (I suggest coloured photocopies), and the Transcript together with the "International Transcript Request Form" sent directly from Poly Ibadan, then with 7 working days the evaluation will be ready.

If you are in Nigeria, you will need a Dollar denominated Debit Card to make payment online, so you need to get this first. Then, apply for and pay for Course by Course Report + ICAP; then send your photocopies directly to them, request for your transcript to be sent directly to WES Office. Make sure you fill up the International Transcript Request Form and ensure that whoever that will sign your Transcript must also fill Part B of the form and sign and stamp it appropriately, and the school has to send it directly to WES - you may use Courier - FEDEX or DHL, or Registered Post.

The address is:

By Postal Mail:
WES Reference No.____________________

Attention: Documentation Center
P.O. Box 5087

New York, NY 10274-5087
USA

By Express Courier:
WES Reference No.____________________
World Education Services
Attention: Documentation Center
64 Beaver St. #146
New York, NY 10004
USA

Once you apply and pay your fees at WES website, you will have a Unique Reference No., make sure that the address is written in the format above with your Reference No., also, Poly Ibadan must adhere to this addressing policy when sending your Transcript to them. It is very important!

The truth is that WES knows that they are respected all over USA & Canada, as such they have a very strong process-driven application policy. But, if you follow these basic steps you will not have any challenges with the evaluation. Nobody gave me guide in 2012 when I did mine, yet I was able to scale through. The only clog on the wheel of progress might be the time it will take Poly Ibadan to prepare your Transcript. But start, the process is pretty straight forward.

I hope this guide will help you. Best of luck. If you need anything more, am ready to assist and help.

Good luck!

Thank you very much @GNwafor.
Since I already did an evaluation with WES Canada in 2010, I called WES USA, opened a new account on March 3rd, 2017 and they just transferred my already verified transcripts to my new account in US (took 3 days) and the real evaluation took another 3 days. So, I got my US credential evaluation report ready in 6 working days since I didn't have to request another set of transcripts from The Polytechnic Ibadan.

The Evaluation Report came back with my 'ND' equivalent to US 'Associate degree' and 'HND' equivalent to US 'Bachelor's degree'. Thanks!
