Century Power To Complete 1,500mw Power Plant In 2020 by investnow2013: 12:49pm On Mar 25, 2017
By Michael Eboh Century Power, a subsidiary of the Obijackson Group, Thursday, said its 1,500 megawatts (MW) power generation plant would be completed by 2020 and would start making contribution to the national grid. The company in a statement in Abuja, said the plant, which is being constructed in Okija, Anambra State, would be built in three phases, the first being 495MW. Speaking in a panel discussion at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT Energy Conference in the United States, Managing Director Century Power, Mr. Chukwueloka Umeh, said the company is committed to boosting Nigeria’s electricity generating capacity, adding that the challenges currently facing the power sector in Nigeria are surmountable and are being addressed through private sector initiatives. He said, “There are challenges facing each facet of the power value chain in the country, starting from gas generation all the way to electricity distribution, and in order to fix these, significant investment is needed. “A large part of this investment will come from local and foreign investors, but the government must create favourable conditions in all these sub-sectors to ensure influx of these desperately needed investments. It cannot be business as usual.” He added that Nigerians are entrepreneurial in nature, but needed to have the right infrastructure to unlock the potential that have been talked about for decades. “It is easy to see that we export timber, but import toothpicks simply because we do not have a steady and reliable supply of electricity to allow SMEs manufacture goods locally at competitive prices, thereby creating jobs for the growing unemployed population. “The population worries about tariff increases, but do not realize that they actually pay much higher tariffs by generating their own power with petrol or diesel powered generators,” he argued. On renewable energy, he said that what Nigeria still needs are large baseload plants, with the capacity to generate from 100MW and above. According to him, renewables are essential to help preserve the environment, and sources such as hydro are definitely good to have in the power mix. However, he explained that currently available gas turbine technologies come with higher efficiencies, which make them a sustainable source of power without negatively impacting the environment. He also stated that gas-fired gas turbine plants operating in open cycle or combined cycle mode are currently the best option for Nigeria to quickly boost its baseload power output to a reasonable number because they can be developed, built and commissioned in three to six years. In addition, he explained that Century Power Limited, like the other organizations in the Obijackson Group, is keen on contributing to the development of Nigeria, stating that the country needs all the power it can get to pull it out of the doldrums of suppressed organic economic development. He added that, “Much work needs to be done, and can only be achieved if the government sees private sector investors as the true catalysts for economic development that they are, and creates appropriate policies to aid sectoral development, as well as provides a favorable climate for such investments. “Without a robust power industry, providing a steady and reliable supply of power to the country, the much talked about potential of Nigeria will never be realized.”

CENTURY POWER BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF 2,000MW POWER PLANT IN ANAMBRA

Century Power Limited, a subsidiary of the Obijackson Group, owners of Nestoil Limited, plans to start the construction of a-2000megawatts (Mw) thermal power plant in Anambra State, energywatchng.com reports.

The power plant, which will be sited at Okija in Anambra State, has been structured in such a way that the first phase, which will give an output of 465Mw and will commence operation in 2018.

Its Assistant General Manager (AGM), Group Business Development, Mr. Simeon Tor-Agbidye, told The Nation that the firm is tidying up arrangement for gas supply to the power plant from the East-West gas pipeline also known as the Obiafu/Obrikom – Oben (OB3) gas pipeline. The gas will be taken from the eastern part of the pipeline.

He also noted that a subsidiary of the Obijackson Group – Energy Works Technology Limited, is fabricating part of the topside facilities of Total’s Egina floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

He said: “A few weeks ago, we had a sail off for the Oil Loading Terminal (OLT) piles for the project. We sailed them off to South Korea where they will be integrated on the FPSO. We have finished that.

“We are at the final stages of completing K2s pipeline for Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC). The project is an engineering, procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the 40km x 20 inches export pipeline to re-route Kolo Creek gas to Soku Gas Plant.

“We are also progressing smoothly with the OB3 pipeline. Obiafu/Obrikom–Oben is an EPC contract for the 64.5km x 48 inches gas pipeline project. We will soon complete that too. He explained that the scope of OB3 was actually split between Nestoil and Oilserv,” he said.

Tor-Agbidye said while Nestoil is coming from the West, Oilserv is coming from the East. He said: “One of the major achievements we have accomplished on this project is being able to surmount the challenges of the terrain. Coming from the West, we had some of the most difficult terrain crossing several rivers. We have crossed these rivers successfully with the innovative horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technology with our client, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Our subsidiary, NestHak HDD Limited is an expert in the technology and only company in Nigeria that has 100 per cent success in the job.”
