Former Coach of the Super Eagles, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde says there is no Nigerian football club that can truly qualify to be described as a professional football club in the real sense of the word. Onigbinde who was a guest on a radio programme monitored in Abuja said going by the FIFA standard, ‘’there is no Nigerian team that has a management that is elected’’.

He added that the main problem with Nigerian teams are that they have refused to be organized and run professionally like their counterparts in other parts of the country.

“The truth is that in the real sense of the word there is no profession club in Nigeria. What FIFA recommends is that the management board of the clubs must be elected but you and I know that here they were all appointed. Secondly, do they have any strong youth teams? You know the answer. “Clubs in Nigeria are operating like parastatals of government and that is why instead of investing to develop the game everybody is rather interested in what they will benefit personally.”

Maybe when the league is fully privatized or sold publicly like in Germany these things will develop.

The fact is that the NPFL needs to set a standard for the League just like ABSA in South Africa. When they do this, the clubs will take it more professional.
However, adequate funding is also required to meet up international standards.

I have to agree with him after Rivers United threw away a 3 goal advantage in the CAF champions league recently. A league where you hardly record away wins, is that one a league?

Naija no just dey try at all, I managed to see a highlights of a Nigerian Premier League, it was nothing to write home about, the stadiums were dirty, players were looking so unkept,

NIGERIA don't know that there's so much money to be made from football, if they can make NPL professional, it would attract investors who would pump money and it would also attract viewers from all over.

Nigeria league tire me

Good point

Maybe when smaller brands start investing in sponsorship, the bigger brands may follow suit.

The league has sponsors.

Why did you mention Barclays when they don't operate in Nigeria as a consumer bank?

Is it because you watch the EPL and have no imagination?
