The Federal Government has approved the sum of N7.066 billion for the construction of the residence of the vice president. The project, which is to be handled by Julius Berger Plc is to be completed within a period of 20 months.

The Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan currently resides at the Akinola Aguda House, which was actually designed to be a guest house for the president.

Briefing journalists about the project after the weekly meeting of Federal Executive Council (FEC), which was again chaired by the vice president, the Minister of Information and Communication Dora Akunyili said as it stands now, the vice president has no accommodation befitting his status.

A matter of status

Mrs. Akunyili, who disclosed that the house officially meant for the vice president was given to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, said the guest house is "not befitting for the status of the vice president". "We decided to bring this memo to the council so that we can get approval for construction of a befitting house for the vice president," she said.

"Julius Berger Plc was selected to construct the residence because of its past experience in constructing the presidential villa and the National Assembly. You know you cannot subject the residence of the vice president to a public display and that was why it was not advertised. For security reasons we decided to do what could be called selective tender."

Similarly, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Adamu Aliero, who was with Mrs. Akunyili at the briefing to reporters said that "The vice president from 1999 to 2007 was occupying the residence of the Chief Justice,  because where he was staying before was meant for the CJN as contained in the master plan and in order to restore the master plan, it was decided that the vice president should move and allow the CJN to occupy the house. So it becomes imperative for us to provide accommodation to the vice president," he said.

Ah! they are building a "befitting" paradise for the vice president.

Joke of a nation, the president is away on an holiday, fuel scarcity is the order of the day, Kidnappers are having a jolly business, education is next to nothing, power supply is a dream that our fore fathers had and the same we are still having, and guess what, in all this mess all our dear leaders could think of is to build a house befitting the vice president.
Good people, great nation grin

shocked shocked shocked shocked God dey watch una all. The roads that an average Nigerian will benefit is awarded to a local contractors who will abandon them at the end. A house for a single politician is been awarded to Julius berger for N7billion naira. I dont know if democracy is costing other countries this much, as our leaders are wasting our resources to meet their extravagancy way of life.

A befitting paradise for a VP of a Nation that has been in limbo and nothing good has came out of in years.
A nation that has known no progress for years and yet they wanna spend that much for a house for someone that might not even be in power for long, so if they have to build for President, i wonder how much it would have cost.

This amount of money should have gone a long way in improving our deadly roads,
Due to road accidents, Nigeria has lost 19, 507 citizens across the country. These statistics were revealed by Hon. Patrick Ikhariale while moving a debate on the need to establish a Federal Highways Medical Services Agency and make comprehensive provisions for the establishment of sick bays

FCT minister presented N4.5billion for constructing of the VP, Senate president and the Speaker's quarters to the FEC some weeks back. . .and now the FEC chaired by Jonathan approves N7billion solely for the construction of his quarters.
This is astronomically ridiculous.
This so called quarters that is being built for the VP, is it going to be able to fly in the air that it should cost a whooping N7billion.
Jonathan, FEC. . .bunch of pathetic thieves.

Ordinary 7billion Naira and you people are complaining?

Don't you know we need to build a befitting Villa for the VP? Afterall, if he is going to be president soon, he needs to start living as one. And by the way, do you think we are going to use made in Nigeria products? Everything from the toilet seat to the roofing sheet has to be imported and not just from anywhere, from the US of A.

We also need to have several rooms in the palace for when the VP has visitors. Each room should cost about 100million naira and we must have about 10 rooms. That's 1 billion naira already. Now the kitchen has got to be state of the art. The bath tub made of gold and we must also have underground tunnels so that when there's coup, the VP can eaily get away.

Abeg you guys should stop complaining jare. I see you have even started a revolution thread. If you are that pained, go and include the VP's name in the thread.!

Why can't they renovate the vp residence inside the villa occupied by atiku instead of wasting so much money on building another residence.

You guys should stop blaming Goodluck Jonathan. He has zero power until he is made acting president, abi una no de hear news? There is nobody to sign any new stuff in Nigeria. Even at those FEC meetings, Jonathan can only rubber stamp what the FEC decides, he has no power whatsoever to overule them, he can not sack anybody (they can have a say in his sacking though).

Nigeria is currently a boat without a captain.

Make you mind yourself ooo!!! Even though the reports says the building is supposed to be for the VP, don't even come back with an ounce of blame for him ooo!!! Afterall the VP has no right to speak up against such spending. He just has to move in when the building is done.  The Vice President is BLAMELESS in all wise!! He is an innocent bystander in all this.

In fact, we have proof that his pocket is not even among those to be LINED in all this so, please allow the private pockets get their bonus which they deserve! I mean some may have waited this long for such a contract, and our dear Akunyili is doing her job by explaining, according to the report, that the VP DESERVES this, regardless of the state of the average Nigerian.

there was no v.p residence inside the villa, the one atiku stayed was originally for the chief justice of the federation, that was why when he had problems with obj towards the end of their tenure obj asked him to leave the residence of the chief justice. the guy ha to go and stay in his personal house.
