7 Ways To Identify A Lagos-based Danfo Driver by BaesDiary: 7:25pm On Mar 31, 2017
The staple mode of commercial transportation in and around Lagos (prior to the emergence of BRT) happens to be the Danfo a.k.a Vanagon. Its unmistakable yellow color (with black stripes) usually comes saddled with an unmistakable personality known as the 'Danfo Driver,' whom are also referred to as 'Pilot' by Lagosians.

The following are the 7 unmistakable traits they can be identified with:

1. He never uses traffic indicators, rear and side view mirrors when driving or changing lanes.

2. He speeds up the moment other drivers try to overtake him for no good reason.

3. He has astounding knowledge of alternative backroutes to avoid traffic.

4. He considers having a legitimate drivers' licence a luxury.

5. He thinks going to a driving school a waste of money and precious time.

6. He sees using curse words as exchanging pleasantries.

7. He would rather settle authorities than sort his vehicle registration papers, and have them at hand.

Do you know any any other unmistakable traits they have? feel free to tell us in the comments box.

I agree with your first point but not 100% with your second. Most of them usually speed up when any vehicle tries to overtake them especially on single lane roads. I don't like being overtaken whenever I'm on the wheel too, makes me feel like I'm incompetent. grin

1. The conductor na the side mirror (them dey get only one side mirror, for the left side)
2. About changing lane, fear them ooh, them no send to enter any lane at anytime.
3. Them dey always do competition, especially when their bus never full.... And another omota wey dey find passengers wan over take them.
4. Just because if small hold up, them go follow another route (short cut) wey long die.
5. Them hate seat belt with passion.
6. They don't indicate that they are turning left or right
7. Them dey like close motor for hold up, so there colleagues no go chuk head.

When he says shadow or your side, he doesn't have the right side side-mirror and asking his conductor to check if he's good to swerve.

He knows alternative routes not just to avoid traffic congestion but to also avoid VIOs, Road Safety and likes.

He doesn't joke with his inner mirror.
cool

Most danfos don't have brake light and side mirror. Plus, the ones that have side mirrors, when they want to pull out from bus stops. They are always looking at the passenger door while pulling out, so if you want to drive pass a danfo that's just leaving the bus stop. Please blow your horn loud. The op is right.

Dat's c'mon to many young drivers (private or commercial), esp if u're jst starting to drive. My colleagues & I use to av a slogan wen we started driving dat "wot's d usefulness of d space btw u & d nxt car? " meaning u keep up ur speed till u're "bumper to bumper" wt him, & wen u meet him, nxt target is to overtake.
We outgrew all dat wt time, esp after bashing d cars several times.

For d drivers, I guess part of the reason is cos they don't want d nxt cab to pick a potential passenger ahead of dem. It baffles me dat they display same attitude to private vehicles too. Really, they can be a hell of a burden wen they're ahead of u, esp on a narrow Rd.
