WWE fans were left in floods of tears after The Undertaker signalled his retirement from wrestling. The Phenom was involved in a brutal final match that saw Roman Reigns leave his Wrestlemania record end at 23-2. After taking a while to get up, the camera panned around the stadium as the fans applauded their hero. Taker then appeared in his classic long coat and hat and began to wander around the ring in darkness. He then took off his hat, coat and MMA-style gloves and placed them in the middle of the ring – a sign that he has ended his in-ring career. His gear remained untouched after the event.

He's been an iconic figure for more than a decade and has undoubtedly commanded a healthy salary from his annual appearance at WrestleMania, but if his recent shoddy appearances in the ring weren't enough to convince you it was time for him to hang up his boots, Sunday night's match against Reigns should have supplied all the proof. There were several sloppy moments in the match and all of them were the Undertaker's fault. He is simply too old and beaten up to perform the kinds of matches that made him a legend. This moment was especially egregious:

No one is perfect, but that move was a microcosm of the entire, slow, hard-to-watch match that was served up to fans as the main event. Quite honestly, the SmackDown Women's title match that preceded it was far and away more entertaining.

Taker has earned legions of loyal fans, but his run had to come to an end at some point. Many fans fantasize about dream matches for Taker every year. It's been a while since he tangled with John Cena. He's never wrestled Sting and what about a match at WrestleMania 34 against Finn Balor? All of that sounds good, but there's only one problem. This isn't Taker from 1998 – or even 2008. This version of the man is a shell of himself in the ring and it's painful to watch him work. The chilling entrance and stare only carry so much weight. At some point, he has to be able to bring it in the ring. As Jim Ross eluded to during the match, Taker's heart and mind are still there, but his body is not. Allow me to join in with other members of the WWE Universe in saying: "thank you, Taker," but the farewell was about three or four years too late.
