The Kebbi State Government on Monday directed the immediate closure of a secondary school in Yauri Local Government, where all the teachers and principal were found to be absent.


The state Commissioner of Education, Muhammadu Magawata, who gave the order, directed the principal and all the affected staff to report to the ministry for appropriate sanction.

According to NAN, Magawata, who had visited to inspect facilities at the Government Day Secondary School, Makirin described the conduct of the principal and teachers as appalling.


“Imagine a school, where there is no principal, no staff and only students are at the assembly.

“What do you expect the government to do?

“When I joined the students for the usual assembly parade by 8am, the principal was absent and this informed my decision to shut down the school,” he said.

The commissioner directed the Zonal Education Officer to ensure the school remain close and bring all the truant staff to the ministry.

He warned that the ministry would no longer condone truancy, lateness and absenteeism, adding that those found wanting would be expelled.

The commissioner directed all zonal education officers across the state to henceforth open attendance register for staff in all schools under their supervision.

“Whosoever absconds from duty for a period of five days should be expelled, while those absent for three days should be suspended.”

According to him, the state administration under Gov. Atiku Bagudu has prioritised education and will view any attempt to deviate from the policy as sabotage.

Since na one of the northern states enjoying free school meals maybe the teachers decide too to wear school uniform to also the enjoy the FREE school meal

Well....Government runs too many schools..and as a result cannot fund all of them adequately....as well as fund teacher salaries too.

Also, I ain't surprised it is a rural school. Infact, this is typical of rural schools across Nigeria. It could be anywhere in Nigeria(which is why NYSC cannot be scrapped).

I think we should privatise more schools.Sure fees would shoot up......but teachers might sit up...especially as they might get sacked if they pull off such an absentee stunt.

And I am sorry to say that that is not true....and you know it.

Used to live up North...and the few times I entered govt offices, at least several civil servants were on seat.

Once had to go to a court to get an affidavit in a Northern town. At ten am....everyone was at work.

that's not true bro. The most are yoruba's the always find a way to doggle duty, but hausa names are most in the list of ghost workers

Come to think of it...most likely they were running late. When you owe teachers or any sets of workers 5-6 to salary, moral and enthusiasm to go to work the next day will be low. Also, despite the fact that salaries are not been paid, life must still go on, bills must still be paid, you must put shelter above you and food on the table for the family, so it is reasonable for these individuals to rechannel their talent to seek daily bread elsewhere in addition to the teaching job.
