The Moab or GBU-43/B is the world's largest non-nuclear weapon.

First tested in 2003, it was developed by by US forces in preparation for the Iraq invasion but was never deployed during the war.

The huge bomb measure 30 feet (9 metres) long and 40 inches (1 metre) wide, and weighs 21,000lbs (9,500kg) – heavier than the Hiroshima nuclear bomb.

While it has a blast radius that stretches a mile in each direction the bomb leaves no lasting radiation effect because it is non-nuclear.

Deploying such a large bomb isn't easy as even the world's largest bombing aircraft can't manage the Moab's size and weight.

The bomb can only be deployed out of the back of large cargo plane using aunique system.

A parachute pulls the bomb out of the plane on a box-like pallet that quickly separates from the explosive.

Grid fins then extend from the body to help control the bomb's descent.

It accelerates rapidly to its terminal velocity and is partially guided to its target via satellite.


HOW IT IS DEPLOYED

- The bomb has ‘grid’ fins that fold into the body during carriage

- It can only be deployed out of the back of large cargo plane due to its size

- The bomb rides on a pallet, a parachute pulls the pallet and bomb out of the plane

- The pallet then separates so that the bomb can fall to its target

- The bomb’s grid fins extend to help control the bomb’s descent

- It accelerates rapidly to its terminal velocity and is partially guided to its target via satellite

- It explodes six feet (1.8 metres) above the ground

- The idea behind this ‘airburst’ mechanism is to spread its destructive range

I do not know why you engage in these school yard arguments.

We all know that USA manufacture and use weapons including bombs for strategy reasons. The US MOAB was a strategic response for the Islamic fighters in Afghanistan and they have used it.

The US has demonstrated over and over again that, they will deploy and willing to deploy their bombs, we saw that in Japan...Russia on the other hand manufactures these bombs for tactical reasons against the US, just to show off that...'ha look, we can build a bigger bomb'. If the US think that, a bigger bomb than Russian's FOAB will give them a better strategic advantage, they would have done. After all, US have the technology to do that, and their defense budget is 10x that of Russia.

At some point, the the size and magnitude of a big building begins to loss it's value and just like with anything, there is a point of diminishing return. The US is the only country that have used Nuclear weapon in battle and they are the only country that have used large non-nuclear weapons in battles as well. With all these noise about Russian and their FOAB and their superiority, how many times have they deployed these weapons in battle or tested them in real battle situations? Let's get some perspectives here...

Russia have the same power that US have at the UN, they are both permanent veto countries. Yes, US had more influence, but the truth that US influnce not withstanding, if Russia oppose US at the UN, US cannot do anything about it, even if they need that thing badly.

So, I will say their powers cancel each other out at the UN...most recently, US proposed a resolution to condemn Assaid's use of chemical weapons in Syria and Russia blocked it and that issue is dead. Therefore Russia have the latitude to also do and undo worldwide and the UN cannot stop them.

Agreed, US have more foreign military bases, but the money US spend on military R/D is greater than the entire Russia military budget...also the portion that US spend on military procurement is greater than the whole of Russia budget.

US will not attack Russia directly as they can do it other ways, plus they wouldn't gain anything by attacking them. They forced the the Russians hands during the Cold War and won, leading to the disintegration of USSR to smaller components and the goal of Putin now is to bring those parts together, let's see how far it goes. The US also took Russian economy down recently by forcing global oil prices down and for the first time, while Russia is forced to cut their military budget in the face of current economic realities, US is increasing theirs.

US can do more damages to Russia without firing a single bullet, the reverse is not true of Russia. We have all been saying that, Putin missed calculated by siding with Trump during the last election, Trump have a bigger sized ego on his shoulders than Putin and he has now realize it. No matter, who occupies the White House, US military foreign policies and projections will not change.

I think trump is simply dropping americans antiquated weapons. MOAB is a pretty old cold war weapon with little manoeveribility, it can't be delivered with modern warcraft and is actually a liability in war.

The missiles the launched from miniaturized ships and a submarine in the Mediterranean sea, guided by geolocation over the sea and the desert, hit their planned targets in the Syrian cities, destroying stockpiles of terrorists' weapons.
