For slugs and snails, crush dry egg shells mildly so the sharp sides would be visible, you can use your hands to gently crush, spray around the vegetables, watch the result. |

Gadgetmobil: Believe me sir, I tried this method. The slugs and snails even preferred the ones I poured the crush eggs around. This simply doesn't work. 2 Likes |

More Updates: (Getting more Ugu from a single seed) I am getting better at this, like they say; "practice makes brings perfection". I was able to get about 32 new ugu plants (fluted pumpkins) from just 10 seeds. Now that's what I call reducing cost to maximize profit. NB: Each seeds were divided into 4parts. 10 seeds gave me 40 pieces. 32 germinated though still expect other to sprout forth, (check some in the soil and found them have roots) so I will wait it out. Sorry all. This is the last I would be doing on fluted pumpkin, it has been overflogged already. Well, maybe if something new pops up. 4 Likes

Im so impressed with your Pumpkin posts. A great relief. Seed multiplication in these harrowing times is no mean feat. Please share it formally or open a new thread on it. Its worth learning for folks like me. Issues like the time it takes to multiply times 4. The conditions and challenges experienced. Special feeding or nurturing for the plants under this condition. 1 Like |

Itydee: I wouldn't claim credits for the multiplication trick but I learned it from this post on nairaland. https://www.nairaland.com/3706782/how-get-four- ugu-plants All you need to achieve same feat is in there. Pls don't forget to credit the OP. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Farm Update: Happy Sunday folks, past 2weeks have been a very busy/hectic one for me. Setting up a farm isn't moi-moi biko. A different ballgame, totally different from running a quarter plot kitchen garden. The land is 2 and half acres, but I would be making use of just 1acre at the moment (I can't comma kill myself...lol). Farm location is at Itekun, at Igbesa. Two access points; Land and water. I opted for the boat river option cause it's faster and cheaper. There's electricity supply in the community and also good network (telecommunication), so I ain't totally isolated. The land is fertile, good soil with lots of worms/bugs (though not a criteria, always good to do soils testing). Got a place just closeby to stay on the farm if the need arises. So far so good, it's just been feasibility studies. Planning on growing dry season fluted pumpkin/Lagos spinach/Tomato farming and just maybe, the rest goes for cassava. More updates to come later. (Note: I just may open another thread on the Farm 1 acre setup if the need arises) 2 Likes |

Garden Updates: Things have been going beautifully well at the garden. Put a friend neighbour of mine in-charge of sales and looking after the garden for me. The tomatoes (Rio Degrande) are just good to behold, it's like growing apples. People kept asking, "are these tomatoes?". The size is amazing (totally organic, no fertilizers used). The fluted pumpkin raked in a total of N1,950 from sales (I kept laughing when he gave me the cash from proceeds of sales...hehehehe). He also sold Basil (scent leaves); was given N200 for that. Hahahaha...who buys scent leaves? Was surprised when he said people came and requested to buy after buying Ugu leaves. Well, would be taking "US" out later in the day to spend our cash from the garden sales. Lol TIME TO INTRODUCE ANY PLANT: 1. Red Bell Pepper 2. Chili Pepper Monday would be a good day to visit the agro stores at Lasu Road/Alaba International to get some good varieties. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by jidestroud(m): 5:27pm On Sep 25, 2017 |
Cherie04: I'm not too sure how the cabal works in your area, and when I eman the cabal, I mean the market women who are involved in the Ugu trade. Nevertheless, you could simply work into the market around you and tell them you've got ugu for sales. Trust me, they will come and Yes, They will cheat you if you are new to the sales and how the measurements goes. (This is dependent on how large your ugu field is anyways) You could also do self marketing to people around. This is also determined by your person how you feel about going one on one, telling people; "do you need ugu? I've got for sale" lol. You can also just sell to friends, neighbours etc. Well, in doing this, you will have to gracious sell beyond the normal quantity. Lol!!! (They are your people na) 1 Like |

jidestroud:Sir, can I just buy the big ugu pod that contains plenty seed or is there a better alternative like treated ones. |
Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by jidestroud(m): 9:41pm On Sep 28, 2017 |
Praktikals: Yes you can buy the pods but I prefer buying the seeds already extracted. The last one I got went for about N6000 (that's a paint rubber and the half of calabar variety). I don't know of already treated ugu seeds been sold in the market, except for self treatments with insecticides/fungicides before sowing into mother earth. |
