Dry Season Farming

While I wait out the harvest of cassava off the farmland I acquired, I will get myself busy once more just on my garden.

For now, it's basically land preparation/fortification. Had to prepare the beds, and apply compost manure on them against the planting time which is going to be probably in some weeks time. I need to maximize this dry season and make the most of it in vegetable farming.

More updates on vegetables to plant soon (still undecided)

Day 1 (Dry Season Soko farming)

I have decided on what vegetable farming to engage in this dry season and it's going to be "Soko". I went ahead to buy some seeds yesterday along Lasu - Iyanaba Road, each going for N100 per the small tin tomato measurement cup (bought 4 of it).

Also, I was able to buy some Super Grow fertilizer to be used this coming dry season on the farm. I have heard quite a lot about this GNLD product and I am going to be giving a trial with this batch of Soko farming. The 5 litres goes for about 15k after pricing like my life depended on it, but I ended up buying 75cl measured out for me at N1200. How the Mallam did the mathematics is a mystery to me.

I have planted the seeds on the nursery bed this morning, went to cut some palm tree leaves for covering the beds. Now the waiting game begins while I keep watering the prepared beds from time to time.

Cost Incured
1. Soko seeds: (N100 per tie) x 4 = N400

2. Super Grow: N1200
3. Transportation: lol N 200

Total: N1800 (which was gotten from sales of my Ugu leaves grin )

Thanks alot. I had seen that same resource before. Lol. The thing I don't know is "what amount of time does it take to get that projected N500k ROI?"

By the way I also stumbled on a thread here on NL. If you're really interested in tomato production. I can promise you you will stay glued to your screen from pages 1 to the end- Very resourceful.

Dry season is the best time for planting tomatoes.

Because it doesn't need too much rain.

And heavy rain won't be bending your tomato stems.

Sun is needed for it to ripe in time, when they fruiting.

Well said that tomato does not need too much water; however, if you want to make good profit, it is the time to plant it. If you want to cultivate it as hobby, it is better not to plant during rainy season.

Let us ask ourselves, where are the tomatoes we eat during real scarcity come from? Cameroon most likely. And are we saying they store their tomatoes and sell at that time? I doubt it. So, there are tricks for planting during rainy season. Get the skills and be in real cash. Except one wants to go into processing tomato; then, i can advise one to perhaps stay away from rainy season too. But you want to sell fresh tomato in open market, and you do not want to bother yourself with marketing, learn planting tomato during rainy season. You really want to avoid competing with tomatoes from the north since you do not plan having tomatoes on 1,000 ha.

Check out the price of tomato now, and it will continue crashing till 35kg basket will be around N800. What kind of profit will you make from it? Waste of time, waste of resources, and waste of energy. Lets do some maths.

You have 15 tonnes on 1 hectare that will give approx. 428 baskets of 35kg. At N800, you have N342,000 sales. After removing your cost of production, you may run at loss.

Ok. You have 10 tonnes on 1 hectare during rainy season. That is 285 baskets and you sell @ N10,000 per basket, you have N2,850,000.

Of course, you can get more than 30 tonnes on 1 ha if you really do it very well. Very very possible.

Lastly, make sure you plant similar variety to what the northerners bring. Practice it very well as you may need to make so many adjustments. The notherners plant Roma variety more. Many hybrid varieties have been developed from Roma; hence, get something that is red, meaty, less watery and firm.

Check your soil and know the diseases there and search for a variety that can tolerate or resist the diseases in your soil. This is the way to do it and no other way.

The variety you use might be different from the one I am going to use despite we might have our farm in the same city. Lol. You get this wrong, you are screwed. Unfortunately, good breeds are expensive.

NOTE: My post (tomato production economics) is applicable to south western part of Nigeria. Northerners have their own style. They play the game with mass production and it makes sense to bring their tomato out during dry season. South East and South South, I am not so sure. This is about production of fresh tomato to make profit and not tomato gardening.

Yes you can buy the pods but I prefer buying the seeds already extracted. The last one I got went for about N6000 (that's a paint rubber and the half of calabar variety). I don't know of already treated ugu seeds been sold in the market, except for self treatments with insecticides/fungicides before sowing into mother earth.

Pls what quantity would be needed for 1 acre

@fluentinfor @oyetpel said it all. This is the perfect time to go into tomato farming. Tomato does well in a Sandy - loamy soil with lots of Sunlight. The dry season also helps warm the soil up for efficient growth. Just make sure all preliminary procedures are taken into consideration before planting i.e. Soil rich in organic matter and well drained (irrigation will also be needed mind you)

NOTE: You will also need to put the variety to be planted into consideration (A dry weather resistant variety)

I will be doing a little of Tomato farming myself. I have gotten two major types grown in the Northern part of Nigeria i.e. Roma VF and the Uc 82b variety....i also have the SuperGro for trials. (i hope it works just fine)

Any farmer who plants now will compete with tomatoes from the north. It is already dry season. So, this is not the time to do commercial tomato farming if you do not want to compete with the northerners. Except you have your special market.

The only disadvantage of using Roma and UC 82B is that they are not with high yield. Although, they are open pollinated which means you do not have to buy seeds again. Just prepare seeds from every harvest. Also, they cannot both fight bacteria wilt, fusarium wilt and other dangerous diseases. However, there are still techniques an experienced farmer can use. If you calculate the cost of hybrid and the yield, you compare it with the yield of any open pollinated variety you are sure you can handle it well, and you see that it is really worth it, go for it. You will never be locked up in the game of patronising hybrid seed sellers.

My approach is also to improve productivity of open pollinated varieties or cross my own hybrid with readily available open pollinated. Honestly, it is not worth buying most of the hybrid seeds around. Importers just keep increasing the prices anyhow and then you find that immediately most of these seeds have gained popularity among farrmers, they just do not perform well afterward. Most likely manufactureres mix F2 with F1. Who knows?

Super gro? Why super gro? Use it when you have hard water. Super gro acts as both an adjuvant and a surfactant. You add it to fertilizer, pesticides, fungicides, acarides etc to make better solution so plants can absorb the nutrients very well. Using only Super Gro might give you very little sucess. But there are cheaper means of making your nutrient solution better.

Hi Jidestroud,
Thanks for all the tips you gave on phone.
Things are shaping up here and I am getting real favored.

I want to ask if you have any Idea how much labor should cost for clearing and ridging of 1 acre.

I contacted 2 sources. Igede people. Their calculations ended up at N20k to clear and N20k for ridging.

Pls are these charges fair??

Any means of getting cheaper labor??

Thanks

Labour varies from place to place, and also, the terrains determines charges over here i.e how bushy the land is? do you have trees, shrubs?...etc. But it's fairly between 4 - 8k per plot (did mine for 7k / plot, though mostly shrubs and elephant grasses). So, i think N20k for an acre is very very affordable.
Are you making ridges on the land? thought you were going for Ugu farming or am i missing something?
