Emma Morano, an Italian woman believed to have been the oldest person alive and the last survivor of the 19th century, died on Saturday at the age of 117, Italian media reported.

Ms Morano, born on November 29 1899, died at her home in Verbania, northern Italy, the reports said.

The mayor of Verbania said: 'She had an extraordinary life, and we will always remember her strength to help us move forward in life.'
Ms Morano was the eldest of eight children and outlived all her younger siblings.

She lived through two world wars and Italy's economic boom to the present day.

In 1938 she left her violent husband shortly after her only son had died in infancy and lived alone, working in a factory to support herself.
