An uneducated person who is a landlord for example, would treat his tenants with more consideration. Before eviction, he would probably consider these: 1. Friendship He probably looked for someone he knew before or the friendship developed over time. 2. Reason for delay The tenant may have lost his job suddenly, got an emergency that took his savings, received a late salary, etc. 3. Other prevailing factors Rent is straining his pockets. He's got too many children or dependants, etc An educated landlord would on the other hand, thanks to his knowledge of business principles, land laws, court procedures, be reasoning the same situation from a radically different perspective: 1. Profit and Loss Separate humanity from business . A loss that has to be mitigated before it grows. This is the kind of reasoning that would push an Indian Supermarket owner to close the main door when a fire breaks out - just in case someone got the bright idea to get away with some of the merchandise. Many lives were lost as a result of this stupidity which is really masquerading as a business decision. Same reason why an owner of a factory would lock in workers who are on a night shift. That makes no reason. Maybe it is to stop them from going out to sleep? But it happens in Africa. 2. Enforceable Agreement The tenant has already made it clear that he is unable to pay. What is wise? Go to court and force them? To hold the property of the tenant? Eviction? Eviction is not always the solution, because sometimes that tenant cannot afford alternative housing. For example if he lost his source of earning. Land ownership as introduced by the West to Africa is an oppressive system. It is a residue of the Feudal Lordship system which held vast lands through a few Lords and turned all dwellers within their territories into their slaves. No wonder we call them "Land Lords." It works by taking awaybland from the many and giving it to a few, and in the process, subjecting the landless to the "landlords." This is why the best managers are not always the most educated. Mordern education corrupts wisdom. |
