Lets Assume There Is No Missing 1k.Lol

There's no missing 1k. U can't add ur assets and liabilities in d same side and still call them liabilities.
U borrowed 100k, returned 2k making ur debt 98k, u spent 97k leaving u with an balance of 1k totaling 98k worth of assets.
Equation balanced.

A mathematical representation would be:

49(owed mum) + 49(owed dad) = 97(spent on bag) + 1(change)
OR
100(borrowed) - 1(unspent) = 97(spent on bag) + 1(spent/returned to mum) + 1(spent/returned to dad)

Basically assets=liabilities, balances out.

What about the 1k i gave to myself? Remember the change was 3k

U didn't give urself any money cos u had none. D money is part of wot u originally borrowed, in the equation/explanation above that's the change/unspent.

When u returned 2k and still had 1k, it reduced wot u were liable for to 99k, not 100k (since u still had 1k)
The riddle plays with words, but mathematically it checks out, cos with ur 1k u have to account for just 99k which is d 2k u gave ur folks plus the 97k u spent on d bag.
Lol

Do people still do this?

There's nothing logical about it.

You need 97.

You borrow 50 from mama and 50 from papa.

You are left with 3 afterwards.

You return 1 to mama and 1 to papa and keep 1 for yourself.

That means you now owe mama 49 and also owe papa 49

49 + 49 = 98

You owe a total of 98 To your parents.

... The seeming 'logic' in it is when you try to add what you owe to what you kept for yourself.

98 owe + 1 kept = 99

That's where the slight confusion comes in, because that's not how it's supposed to be calculated.

As far as your parents are concerned, You owe them 98.

The 98 will be gotten from the 97 for the purchase and the 1 kept.

So, nothing is missing.
