in choosing a RAM for your system, its the type of ram you should look out for.

we have DDR, DDR 2, DDR 3 and most recently DDR 4.

if you remove a ddr 3 RAM from a Dell laptop and put it in a Hp laptop that uses a ddr 3 RAM, it works perfectly without any limitation.
Hence laptop RAM will work on any laptop regardless of where the Ram was taken from , the only condition is the RAM must be of the same type. If you wanna buy a new ram, you do that by asking for ram type and not laptop type.
