The Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, on Sunday said that increasing workers’ salary had become necessary in view of the rising cost of living in the country.

In a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs, Mr Turaki Hassan, to mark the 2017 Workers’ Day, Dogara said that the House was committed to passing a new minimum wage bill.

The speaker reiterated the resolve of the parliament to enact a new wage bill for Nigerian workers.

“I wish to congratulate the entire Nigerian workers as they join their counterparts the world over in commemorating the International Workers’ Day.

“While commending you for your commitment to the service and building of the nation, I wish to assure you that the National Assembly remains committed to the passage of the National Minimum Wage Bill when presented by the executive,” Dogara said.

The speaker further stressed that the eight House of Representatives in particular, was committed to initiating other laws and legislative interventions that would promote the welfare and well-being of Nigerian workers.

Dogara, however, enjoined workers, especially civil servants to rededicate themselves to duty and support government’s laudable policies and programmes.

“As you mark this historic day, I wish to remind Nigerians of the sacrifices made by the working class in nation building.

“I urge you to commit yourselves to doing even more in supporting government’s activities that will better the lots of our citizens,” Dogara said.

Yeye, divide and rule tactics. Now that people are demanding for their allowances is when he wants worker's salary increased. What about job creation?

I hate liars, like this man

We are watching oooh. Saraki better do the needful or resign as promised.

Please, Please Consider Naira Value First And Everything Will Fall Into Place, Atleast The Complains Will Subside. We Are Buying Things At High Price, Salaries Are Not Paid On Time. I Think Thats Our Measure Problem For Now, If FG Decide To Increase Workers Salary Now What Will Happen To The State Governments Who Are Unable To Pay Even This Current Wage Bill?

If you want to know why the oil "boom" of the GEJ era failed to produce more buoyant forex reserves, look no further than the rise in consumption driven by public sector wage increases. The minimum wage rose 260% from N5k under OBJ to N18k under GEJ. This fuelled import growth, like the Udorji awards of the 1970s, without a commensurate rise in export growth.

Yes, I totally understand the appeal of such "pro-people" policies like increasing the minimum wage. Who doesn't want to help the poor? But the road to hell is paved with good intentions. A rise in wages not underpinned by productivity growth will strain government finances and fuel an unsustainable rise in imports driven by consumption. We need to be careful not to be seduced by fanciful talk that you can solve/reduce poverty in Nigeria by government-mandated wage rises.

This is why the GEJ stole all our money narrative winds me up. Whilst his regime was obscenely corrupt, it is a less important explanatory variable for the fragility of the economy.

Forget democracy. The best thing is price ceiling for food rent transport etc. People are making exorbitant profit. Little real value but its promoting inflation.

Why are all the forex auctions grants to companies not yielding results in terms of lower costs of production .

Efforts should be how to forcefully lower prices and not how to increase salaries.

Even though we really need that salary increment now, but looking at how the prices of commodities have tripled in the market, I think price control should come first, else, the effect of the salary increment will not be visible!

My opinion, please!

Shut up Dogara. Idiot Ben Bruce all of u talk as if u re not part of the government. Your privates allowances is too big and constituency projects allowance should stop as legislature has no business with financing projects. So the executive will ve enough to pay workers salaries. Also pass laws to make corruption a death penalty and u will see great progress in workers welfare and that of all Nigerians. U dishonourable thieves, goats eating yams

Increasing workers' salaries alone will only worsen inflation and unemployment.
There should be a REDUCTION in the salaries of Dogara and other politicians holding office.
Their salaries should be matched to the MINIMUM wage.
No more.
No less.

That's the only way to ensure the right people get into leadership positions, stripping off the inflated benefits.

Re: Dogara Urges FG To Increase Workers Salary by Nobody: 2:42pm On May 01, 2017
Only in Nigeria you would hear phrase from government such as "To plan. To initiates. To pump billions in to(at the same time the government are stealing the billions they are talking about). While other countries are using the phrase as " we have completed this and that".

There is no single project for electorates from 2016 budget.

2016 budget were padded out completely by Buhari, Dogara and Saraki.

Now, 2017 is still on padding rooms which they lied to Nigerians that police stole the 2017 documents.
