My last project we worked on the basis of spyders suggestion and to be exact it was 1.33 rods per pillar ie we cut 1 rod into 3.

On reflection afterwards, I decided that if you plan to have shoot out as part of decking, it is better to work on the basis of 2 rods per pillar as the protruding part of the extention after decking was not satisfactory ie we did not get the 72cm we were working towards. More than half was below 36cm.
