AFIKPO TOWN
Afikpo is the second largest town in Ebonyi State and the headquarters of Afikpo North Local Government Area. Twenty-two villages of various sizes make up present-day Afikpo. These include Ozizza, Ohaisu, Nkpoghoro and Itim. The old Afikpo Province once covered areas in Unwana, Edda, Amaseri, and Akpoha. Following the creation of more local governments in Ebonyi State, the administrative boundaries of the old Afikpo Province was redrawn and its geographic size reduced.
Afikpo is the birthplace of several accomplished Nigerian men and women. A notable example is the late Dr. Akanu Ibiam of Uwana, one of the first Igbo medical doctors and former Governor of the Eastern Region. Afikpo is a mecca of ancient Igbo tradition and ceremonial (now antique) masks which have been carefully preserved by the state tourism board. Several archeological findings support the claim that Afikpo civilization existed as far back as the Neolithic age. Mainly farmers and traders, Afikpo is considered a major producer of agricultural products in Nigeria. These include yam, palm produce, maize, groundnut, plantain, banana, cassava, fruits and vegetables. The Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Uwana is located in Afikpo. So is the Mater Misericordia Specialist Hospital. Mater Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery was one of the first nursing schools established in Nigeria by Irish missionaries and Dr. Akanu Ibiam.

Afikpo beautiful Project

Though it has produced world-class leaders, politicians, successful business men and women, technocrats, the level of infrastructural development in the town is far from standard.
Afikpo, situated in the southern part of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, is being referred to as the food basket of the nation. Apart from being the second largest city in Ebonyi, the town is also seen as the centre of ancient Igbo tradition.
History records that Afikpo civilisation existed as far back as the Neolithic age. But its level of civilization seems to have diminished over the years while development have gone to extinct in the ancient city.
A visit to the ancient town will attest to the fact that it has suffered neglect from the government.
To help the plights of the people, Maria Ude Nwachi, top blogger and publisher of Afikpo Chic Times, Afikpo Chic Blog, decided to champion a change revolution in the town.
Nwachi and her team embarked on a beautification project with the mission to make Afikpo a first world town.
Here she reveals her plans and narrates her ordeals while embarking on the project;
Re: AFIKPO Town......politics And Success Achieved by uglyafonja: 2:12am On May 11, 2017
Today I went out with my team, head by my manager, Iheukwumere Okogwu Otu, to see where we can start our journey of turning Afikpo into 1st world town.
We decided to deal with the gullies that are nothing but death traps.
These disgusting gullies has been an albatross to my people for decades. It is over. We are rejecting such eye-sore. We are going to fix it and put rails so that if a motorist has a mishap, he does end it dead or mortally wounded. Without fixing this, our beautification project will come to nil. And we cannot let that happen. Then we are going to fix repair the roads from Local Government office to Eke Market round about. Then head to Amangbala round about and then to Egesco for now. The next phase of road repairs will follow soon after.
The most tear-inducing thing I saw today is the toilets for Eke Market. It was disgracefully bad. So so bad. Looks like what I do not know and understand. So bad, so unhealthy and just so so so. Words fail me. Oh God, my people have suffered. Well I am going to build a world standard toilet facility for our Eke Market. It is going to be even more beautiful than what is obtained in civilized world. I will see to it. Enough is enough. The building of this first class toilet will start this month.
We will also fix the drainage system in the market and the roads we are retouching and beautifying for without that there will still be a problem. So much to do, I am ready because it is all about making sure Governance works the way it was meant to work, which is to lessen the burden of those being governed and to make their lives as easy possible. I will continue to serve myself last. As should be the case for those elected to serve, so this country can also one day become a first world nation.
There is so much I am about to do, it all starts NOW. I will keep all updated on the progress.
Afikpo Beautification Project team and staff whose duty is to sweep Afikpo and keep it looking beautiful will start work in a few weeks.
AFIKPO MUST BECOME A FIRST WORLD TOWN!
Sincerely Yours, Nwanyi Afikpo

Mater Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery

The legendary Mater Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery was one of the first and probably remains the finest nursing school established in Nigeria by the Irish missionaries and Dr. Akanu Ibiam.

Amanchore Cave:

Located at Etiti in Amanchore-Edd in Afikpo-South LGA of the state, this cave is about 3m high with multiple narrow tunnels that extend to different directions. It is accessible through Abakaliki to Afikpo, Ngusu and Mile 2 along Akaeze/Ngusu roads (about 140km and 76km from Enugu and Abakaliki respectively).

Unwana and Ndibe Sand Beaches:

Unwana and Ndibe beaches are both located at Afikpo North LGA. Ideal centers for relaxation, sunbathing, swimming, sport fishing, canoe-racing, and yachting, the two beaches are part of extensive scenic golden sand beaches along Cross River basin .

Lodging
There’s a growing choice of accommodation in Afikpo with the best options including
Ndibe Beach Hotels And Resorts Limited, The Focus Hotel & Resort, and Ikemba Guest House. Most of them are boutique hotels and B&Bs, as there is a relative shortage number of well-equipped four- and five-star hotels. For the moment, the budget hotel rooms offered represent the town’s best-value accommodation.

Dinning
Afikpo is a major food basket of Nigeria. There are a number of local restaurants, fast food joints and bukkas around town. Most of the dishes are usually no different from main Ibo dishes served around the south-east, the meals are served come in large portions, making an excellent low-cost meal.

Shopping
Afikpo offers a range of retail experiences you won’t find in other parts of Ebonyi State. The city has regular flea markets, second-hand clothes shops and plenty of stores selling old books and electronics. It also has more in the way of boutiques selling household goods and fashion accessories made by local designers. Many of Afikpo’s best souvenir ideas involve the art and craft that the town is best known for. Even the smallest pieces make gorgeous souvenirs, but can be very expensive.

Fun Facts
Afipko is also the home of the late Eze (DR)
Akanu Ibiam, who hailed from the village of Unwana. Dr. Ibiam was one of the first Igbo medical doctors of Western training and the former Governor of Eastern region.

In Afikpo, we say Jookwa to welcome guests, greet neighbors and commend someone for a job well done. Expect to be greeted with Jookwa or the English equivalents (welcome, good evening sir/madam, welldone, etc.) when you pass people on the street. And if you visit someone at home, chances are you will also be served with kola nut (the traditional fruit for welcoming guests) in addition to other refreshments. The people of Afikpo are very hospitable, respectful and laid back as you will find out when you visit.
Experience the Sights and sounds of culture
Experience the sights and sounds of well preserved African culture expressed through art, music, dance and long standing customs. Described as a mecca of ancient Igbo culture, Afikpo is blessed with a rich collection of African masks. See the masks. Watch the masquerades in action. Meet the mask carvers.
A quiet and natural getaway
Enjoy a getaway that puts you in close contact with natural landscapes and the famed African hospitality of Afikpo people. A small to mid-size town, Afikpo offers some of the modern conveniences you can expect in bigger towns without the stress and commotion you find in bigger/busier cities.
Outside the town center and just beyond the outlying villages, you will find vast expanses of vegetation, pristine landscapes and wild fruits (such as cashews and mangoes) that are free to harvest by anyone. On your way back to town, expect most people you meet to acknowledge and greet you – just like the good old days!
Play, learn, explore & stay active
Learn how to play traditional music instruments or pick up some new dance steps. There are dozens of dance groups and skilled performers ready to serve as your personal coach.
Hire a tour guide to see parts of the town. Then extend the fun by exploring the neighboring towns of Unwana, Amasiri, Ozizza, Okposi, Edda and more – all within about an hour’s drive away.
Go for a swim in the Cross River at Ndibe beach or Unwana Beach – both are less than 30 minutes drive away. Even better, take a picnic basket and invite friends to come along.
Discover a piece of Afikpo history dating from the pre-colonial era. Back in the 1700s, the old slave route was used to escort slaves from the village of Ugwuegu to the banks of the Cross River near Ndibe Beach. From there, the slaves were loaded onto ships bound for Europe and the Americas.
Stay, wine and dine without breaking the bank.
Staying in a hotel? The rates are very affordable. And the food is cheap, thanks to plenty of farmers and fishermen that produce food for local consumption and export. Also affordable are the cost of hiring a private driver, cook, tour guide, entertainers, etc.
What would you like to do in Afikpo? The possibilities are plentiful. So come visit, explore, relax and go home happy! And if you chose to stay back like so many others who now call Afikpo home, you are Welcome!
