Four Must-have Requirements To Gain Admission In 2017- Abugossips by Akin1212(m): 8:49pm On May 15, 2017
To gain admission in Nigeria, there are many requirements students must satisfy. The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) banned the popular post-utme examinations in 2016. The body claimed that most universities have turned the exercise into a money-making venture. Jamb might be right, but the ban made admission processes which were overseen by JAMB tedious than when the universities post-exams were conducted. Jamb threatened by releasing a press release last year. They warned that any school found culpable would face mandatory sanctions.

Abugossips looks into the four most important must-have requirements to secure admission in 2017 amidst the fierce competition below.

1. High UTME scores

Students who perform very well in UTME and with very high scores are well placed to secure admission in 2017. During the post-utme days, only students who made high scores through malpractices fail to impress in post-utme examinations.

Although JAMB's overall cut of mark in 2016 was 180, some federal institutions insisted on 200 pass mark. This is is not expected to change this year as schools such as OAU, UI, and UNILAG have been maintaining 200 cut of mark for a very long time. This means if you score below 200 in your UTME examination, you have a very low chance to secure admission into these institutions.

Students who intend to study courses such as medicine and surgery, pharmacy, law, accounting and other hot courses will really need to score high in UTME this year to secure admission.

2. A complete O'level result.

I have seen students with incomplete O'level results optimistically expecting to secure admission into tertiary institutions. Most students believe awaiting results work like a charm. Expecting results work when you’re lucky. Having your O'level results at hand for admission is wise. The school you’re applying to might decide to carry out their screening processes earlier than when O’level results are released. Most schools, however, do their screening later than the release of O’level results. An optimistic student will be disappointed if he fails English or Mathematics despite having a high score in UTME.

Another case is where prospective students do not ensure they have the best O’level course combinations for their applied courses. Students make this mistake all the time. As a rule of thumb, your O’level subjects combination should be the determining factor. You should choose a course according to what your O’level result is. Making use of the JAMB brochure is a good way to avoid this costly mistake.

Awaiting result and wrong O’level subjects combination is really going to be one of the significant factors of getting admitted into any institution this year. Most schools will specifically use it to screen out students to reduce the number of applicants.

Securing admission is a fierce competition in Nigeria. Over 1.5 million students apply through JAMB every year for a space in Nigerian universities. It is more than just reading your books exhaustively while preparing for UTME, it is more than knowing the crème de la crème of the institution you are applying to, it is more than just falling under the catchment area of your choice of school. Although these four must-have requirements can individually secure your admission into the University, it is an additional advantage if you have all four. Best of luck.
