This is a drug reaction called Steven johnson's syndrome. This reaction affects mostly the skin. It could also affect internal organs of the body if not we'll managed. Steven johnson's syndrome can happen to anybody because each individuals body makeup is unique. People react differently to different drugs. The boy may have reacted to one of the drugs. The most common drug associated with this syndrome is septrin.so once you take a drug a notice any adverse reaction, run to the hospital before it deteriorates. I repeat, it can happen to anybody.

It's difficult to accurately forsee a drug reaction.
Any person blaming this nurse is just out for mischief.
SR has formed a penchant for demonizing pple without doing proper investigation and just bcoz they are not based in Nigeria they feel they are immuned from whatever irreparable harm their sometimes shallow reporting does.
Fansidar(Amalar,Laridox), and Septrin too,are commonly prescribed drugs that a lot of pple are prescribed for& take without any adverse reaction whatsoever. Its even recommended that Fansidar b given to every pregnant woman at least thrice during d course of her pregnancy.
But d few that do react to their sulphur content can come down with dramatic reactions, which if not tackled promptly can really be devastating.
The only fault here is that d child was not promptly treated for d drug reaction, but d nurse or dr here cannot b charged for anything.
At d rate at which some of these badly investigated reports on Drs,hospitals &nurses are going in Nigeria, it may reach a point wen patients treatment are delayed due to fear of arrest or prosecution in Nigeria to d extent of that delay being a cause of many adverse outcomes in future,& not even d administration of a wrong drug or dosage!

Thanks for this bro. A lot of peeps just prefer putting the blame on someone without proper investigations carried out.

Whoever gave that info is totally wrong.
Fansidar is part of standard Antenatal management in malaria endemic areas like ours.
It was formerly recommended as a triple course intake as a preventive measure against malaria. Now d latest protocol is that d pregnant woman shud even get 5 courses of it as long as she doesn't react! Its just that it shouldn't be prescibed or taken within d first 3months of pregnancy. The logic is simple:Malaria untreated is more likely to kill mother and child than Fansidar that may cause damage to unborn child, not necessary death, and spare mother.

Hmmm.....the mortality rate of pregnant women and unborn children would always remain high in a country were medical professionals consider it standard practice to administer known teratogens for malaria prophylaxis. I'm keen to see the evidence used to justify the use of Fansidar as a prophylactic treatment in pregnant women if there is one. I'm guessing it's one of those 'home-grown' strategies deployed by doctors in Nigeria because they haven't been exposed to global best practices. Which O and G specialist actually endorsed this policy?!

When the foundation is destroyed, what can the righteous do?

When the Educational Foundation is destroyed, these and more is what you expect.

Our Educational system is in shambles. Incompetent graduates roaming everywhere.

All they want is CERTIFICATE!!!!

And their parents don't care about competency, they want certificates too. So when they attend their village meeting, they join the league of old fools to scream "I HAVE 5 GRADUATES" you think its easy? undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided

IT IS A PRODUCT OF A ROTTEN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.

It is only a hypocrite that will come here and say otherwise.

I schooled here in Nigeria and Abroad too.

The system is messed up. Unqualified Lecturers who openly encourage cheating and sorting.

Lecturers who encourage sex for grades.

Lecturers who doesn't even know what they are lecturing.... They lack both theoretical and practical knowledge.

Lecturers who threaten to fail you if you don't do their bidding and many times carry out their threats.

I pity and weep for my dearly beloved country.

EVEN IF ITS A DRUG REACTION, THEN THE NURSE SHOULD HAVE ACTED SWIFTLY TO MANAGE IT>>>>
it is called steven johnson syndrome. it can happen anywhere, anytime. but I dont really blame you. I blame shallow and sensationslistic journalism.
it was not a wrong drug. the patient just reacted to it, simple.
There are many sides to a story and I implore you to always take out time to know the truth before you condemn.

you are blessed. I think these kids on nairaland need to change the way they think. It's really affecting their physche and these same set of people are supposed to be future leaders, pathetic. People don't take their time to analyse situations before they take sides. I'm sure if SR reporters were to come up with a report that Seun and nairaland were scammers, most people even without logically looking at both sides of the story will quickly condem seun

This is a drug reaction which can happen to anybody. It doesn't mean that the wrong medication was administered rather the student in question reacts adversely to the medication given to him. Most people don't know that they reacts to some drugs eg not everybody reacts to chloroquine or sulphur etc. Some may have mild reaction while in rare cases it maybe life threatening like in this kid.

of course you are right.. but the 'nurse' should have taken drastic step to ameliorate her clients condition... he or she failed to take history n denied administering sulphonamides resulting to Steven Johnson syndrome.

Oshey. This is actually true. But then hasn't the minister of health banned antimalarials monotherapy? Why didn't the nurse stick to artemether/lumefantrine which has lower incidence of side effects? And for that he or she may be held liable

Exactly !! These our medical professionals should be up to date. When last did I even taje fansidar. It has always been combination therapy. .
I wonder how many of our medical professionals keep informed.

Believe Sahara reporters at your own peril. They can only know about that " medical history" if a court subpoenas for the patient's record as no board certified medical professional will hand over a patient record or comment about a patient to the press. So Sahara reporters are just relaying a one sided news.
We will continue to speculate with conjectures and insinuations. The fact still remains that the nurse didn't give the wrong drug. First line treatment of fever And then what Funny how you type ignorantly

Its a drug reaction dat can happen to anyone, its not as if d nurse does not know wat she's doing, some people react so badly to sulphonamides,e.g fansidar which can b use to treat malaria, and septrin for cough, d child is just unlucky to fall into d category of people DAT react to dis drugs.pls don't blame d nurse.
