Facebook will pay $122 million in fines to the European Union, over charges that it deluded regulators during its 2014 getting of WhatsApp. The fine, reported Thursday, is one of the biggest the company has needed to pay to any govt.

European authorities said Facebook or myspace was not sincere about its ability to recognize customers who had both Facebook or myspace and WhatsApp records and link those records. At the time of the merging evaluation, authorities were particularly worried that WhatsApp users would have their data imparted with Facebook without their consent.

“When Facebook notified the acquisition of WhatsApp in 2014, it informed the Commission that it would be unable to establish reliable automated matching between Facebook users' accounts and WhatsApp users' accounts,” regulators said. “However, in August 2016, WhatsApp announced updates to its terms of service and privacy policy, including the possibility of linking WhatsApp users' phone numbers with Facebook users' identities.”

Despite sustained analysis from several Europe countries over the last week, Facebook is not a unique focus on. Other large companies in the U.S., such as Amazon. com, Google, and Microsoft company, have been subject to antitrust from European regulators. Last Saturday, an Italian antitrust agency also declared they were fining WhatsApp for $3.3 million for demanding customers to discuss their private details with Facebook.
