The ''Mourinhomatics'' of UCL Qualification: The Concept of Loosing Battles (Matches) to Win Wars (Titles)


Manchester United have just booked a place in the Uefa Champions League next season by defeating Ajax FC of Amsterdam in the Europa League final and by doing so we have decided to look at the manner in which Jose Mourinho has made his Man Utd side qualify using the back door. Back in August Manchester United began their campaign in the EPL with great hopes and expectations of being at the summit of the Ladder. They kicked off by beating Bournemouth 3-1 away which saw ex PSG star Zlatan Ibrahimovic register his first goal in English Top Football Division. United went on to win Southampton 3-0 and then a late winner from Marcus Rashford ensured that they got all 3 points against Hull but after facing Pep Guardiola's ManCity Side they were outplayed and beaten by the visitors 2-1, this defeat led to an unprecedented drop in form and lack of confidence, leading to two more defeats, the first in the Europa League loosing a goal to nil to Feynord, followed by another EPL defeat at the hands of the Hornets 3-1 and it was the first time a Mourinho team were losing 3 consecutive games in a row for over a decade. They then began their EFL Cup campaign by beating lower division Northampton meanwhile in the League they went on a 3 game win run beating the League Champions Leicester and Zorya in the Europa League. Draws to Burnley, Stoke, Liverpool, and a defeat to Chelsea held them in 6th Position, a position they will unfortunately hold on to for many months, the defeat to Chelsea was Mourinho's second heaviest defeat in his career with the exception of the 5-0 drabbing in the hands of Pep's Barcelona in 2010. Jose's side kept pressing and playing free flow attacking game but the results were not coming as expected they gave away their leads in the dying minutes and dropped too many points at home A 2nil win over Zorya on 8 Dec ensured qualification as top seed of their group, meanwhile in the EFl Cup they had soared to the Semis ready to face hull. They beat Hull in the first Leg but lost 2-1 in the away leg but it mattered less because of the aggregate advantage. Manchester United then faced Southmapton in Feb 28 EFL Cup final at Wembly, a late Zlatan header gave them the honors. Mourinho became the firs Man Utd manager to win a trophy in his first season in Charge Elsewhere in the League they were unbeaten but it never lifted them above fifth and it became so frustrating that United record signing exclaimed '' we are cursed'' as the games came by more injuries to key players, Jones and Smalling all picked up knocks on international duty, Pogba sidelined , Luke shaw etc, United faced Chelsea in the FA cup quarter final and were beaten by Kante's strike. In the Europa League they had also progressed pass St Ettiene and in the second leg against Anderchlet, the worst happened Zlatan was ruled out for 9 months after a knee ligament tear, the bandage group became filled with more players as Rojo too was ruled out including Young and teenager Mfosuh Mensah. The pundits cried foul and slammed Jose for uninspiring displays which saw them drop more points at home. Mourinho had changed focus as he realised the forces that be would not let Man Utd finish in the Top four, they had managed to stay away from 6th for just two weeks and with a second leg game against Celta vigo Mourinho rested alot of his players and handed a debut to United starlet Tazuenebe, they were beaten at the Emirates and Arsene Wenger had his first victory over a Mourinho side in 17 attempts. Mourinho stood his ground that prioritising the Europa League was common sense and that he had 16 fit players for 8 weeks matches and he didnt have a choice. The football Journalist slammed him for putting all his eggs in one basket as anything could lead to their break. But Mourinho has been in football long enough to know how it works, he must have taken reference from Liverpool in 2005 and Chelsea in 2012 and hoped things will play out accordinly for Man Utd. Meanwhile the Europa League was the only missing trophy from the Old trafford Cabinet and a win would see United topple rivals Liverpool as the club with most major trophies in UK. The sacrifice at Arsenal paid off as Celta were eliminated with the draw at Oldtrafford, a game they almost snatched had it not been for Guidetti's miskick shot in the late seconds of the game. United progressed to Stocklom final but tough League games against Spurs ensured another test of sacrifise. Mourinho rested his stars and was beaten 2-1 in Spurs last game at white heart lane. The next fixtures against Southampton and Palace was for the kids as United drew and won meaning they ended 6th in the table. Many had called for Mourinho's sacking but the Europa League final held them back. The idea of prioritising it didnt sound well to them The world was watching to see how United will conquer Ajax but they did beating them 2 nil in the final. Mourinho was vindicated, it was more important to loose battles and win wars. Loosing to Arsenal and Spurs was a battle but eliminating Celta was a war and winning the Europa League the victory sound. Mourinho has won the Europa League a second time, and it is his 4th European title as a manager. The victory ensures UCL football and a chance to bring in big names. He ends the season on high and he should be praised for his Mourinhomatics, calculating the course of events and maximising his opportunities. He ends his season with an adage '' Loose Battles, but win wars.This is the law of Mourinhomatics.
