I seem to notice a particular trend here, is this a general issue or is it with numbers shared in nairaland? I have given my number in a couple of threads in the auto section and i have been getting calls from these people since Saturday, unfortunately i fell for the text message. Here is what a friend of mine working with a telecom firm CR has to say about this when we talked.

Recently, our esteemed customers have been calling in to complain about being over billed for making international calls. On investigation, I discovered the following:
- The affected customers are flashed by the ‘international numbers’.
- Out of curiosity, they call those numbers, and are billed heavily for the calls
- These ‘international numbers’ are actually SATELITE PHONES (e.g Thuraya and Iridium), and start with +881 (Iridium) or +882 (Thuraya)
- For some customers, the number begins with +239, which is the country code of Sao Tome and Principe.
- For calls from MTN NETWORK to SATELITE PHONES and Sao Tome and Principe, the call rate is N11.67/sec.
- Thus, a 60-second call costs N700.20! I hope this helps somehow.

Thanks for the info, the same number +881935211088 have been not calling but flashing me since last week but when i tried to call back at the first time, i discovered all my credit was gone for just 12 secs. then, i thought somthing was fishing and decided not to answer the call after several attempt flashing me.
   Again, there was another another that starts with +123, keep on flashing and i decided not to answer but immediately i picked the call, the caller dropped expecting that i should call which i ignored and deleted the number from my call list immediately it occured.

They called me and i saw the missed calls, this was sometime mid last year. Thinking it was one of my friends in the UK i called back, unfortunately all of my credit got wiped off. It's really terrible. Assuming the rapture takes place and we all stand before God how do we plead? Not guilty?!!

I used to overlook the impact of such 419ers until i heard of a lady who got duped of her life savings and had to revert to welfare as a single mother with several kids.
