Several police officers are feared to have been killed Tuesday night after suspected officials of the Nigerian Navy stormed a police division in Calabar, southern Nigeria.
Witnesses told PREMIUM TIMES the attack, which began shortly after 8:30 p.m., was still underway as at 10:19 p.m. at Akim Divisional Headquarters.

“The police station is still burning as we speak,” a horrified witness told PREMIUM TIMES.
Naval spokesperson, Suleiman Dahun, told PREMIUM TIMES he wasn’t aware of the development as at 10:26 p.m., promising to revert after his findings.

Police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, could not be reached for comments Tuesday night.
Sources said the unrest was a continuation of an initial skirmish between a police traffic officer and a naval officer at a traffic light near the Calabar Stadium along the Airport Road on Tuesday afternoon.
“Some naval officers ran the red light and police traffic officers intervened, but rather than listen, they descended on the policemen and beat them up,” a witness said. “This was around 5 p.m.”
“Police officers now called for back up and and the Navy also called for reinforcement and they took over the road leading to the airport.

“But the Navy Commander and police commissioner in the state intervened and the two sides backed down,” the witness said.

“However, around 8:00 p.m., when everyone thought the matter had been resolved, naval officers descended on Akim Police Station and started shooting and burnt down the facility.
“We confirmed three bodies but we feared there are more,” the witness said.
The witness also accused the naval officers of blocking fire fighters from extinguishing the inferno set at the police station.
Details soon…

It is appalling that our security forces have become enemies to themselves instead of collaborating to fight insecurity and criminality in Nigeria. What do Nairalanders think of the ego war between Security agencies in Nigeria?

This country is dead already. No leaders but looters, no light but darkness, no happiness but anger, no love but hate, no food but hunger and starvation. No good health but sickness. Where is our Mallam Buhari? Went to London to meet Barny the dinosaur

The culture of waste!

I won't even bother with how insensitive we've become to deaths and killings by whatever means. Now you have law enforcement agents of the Federal government deliberately tearing themselves apart, destroying federal government property and stopping yet another federal agency from putting out the fire. The community that station serves if only symbolically is now laid bare; unscrupulous characters will now confidently, hitherto furtively, move in for the kill because no police is even around never mind that even if there were there'd be no guarantee.

That's how low this shïthole has sunk! What will happen? NOTHING! No accountability, no sense of responsibility or liability, no sanction or punishment, just unbridled impunity!

Military ti take over. 9ja police are just too corrupt for my liking. Police themselves always run red light steadiy, so because navy did it the same thing it suddenly became a crime.

Useless policemen.

Why should police officers intervene? Have we not seen this same police officers run the red light, even drive one way. For all I care, they finally found their match.

This can only happen in a failed country. Everything about the zoo has totally crumbled. Nigeria had it coming a long time ago, but the vegetable fastforwaded its demise. The only reasonable thing left now is to discuss modalities on to redraw the map. We need to follow Ghadafi's advice now to stop further bloodshed. NIGERIA HAS EXPIRED!!!

Exactly what I would do if I was in charge. The earlier we start influencing behaviour through rewards and punishment in this country, the better for us all. Sack and court martial all the culprits. Next time, officers will think twice before behaving like the lowest of animals.

I just wonder what kind of training our armed forces receive. Being in the forces is not just about carrying guns. Military discipline is not just about doing push-ups or developing muscles. There are deep lessons in civics that you must imbibe for you to qualify to serve the state in such an esteemed capacity.

The CIA and the FBI are not the best of friends but they don't brawl on the streets or go to burn the CIA headquarters or the Pentagon. After 9/11, everybody sat up and closed ranks.

The energy and ammunition you're to use to police against oil bunkering and pipeline vandalism, you have turned it against your fellow comrades in arms.

To think, that as a tax payer, my money was used to purchase the ammunitions that were misused is very painful.

Very unfortunate how lawless we are as a people. To think that well deserved punishments up to prosecution and imprisonment of those found guilty won't happen and we'll all move on like nothing happened till the next clash happens makes it more saddening. We've turned human lives to abbatoir settings.
Solution: How do we prevent this from happening again? On one hand we need systems that work so people avoid such acts because they know the consequences. On the other, we need to refine our behaviours to our fellow humans and do what is right & acceptable always.

We are all animals, I have said it time and time again, our problem is way more than leaders, we are worse, cos we are cut from same fabric; the sense of Ego, "I pass you" , pride , selfishness, greed and most times at the expense of your neighbour has ravaged the black race. Other races seek to advance their race and wouldn't mind if at the expense of other races, but for blacks each individual want to advance yourself, and show how important he is at the expense of his own people.. Yet we come to cry of not being respected by others ; how do you expect people to respect u when u don't respect yourself? It is really sad how blacks think and this accounts for the backwardness we face despite finding ourselves in blessed lands. That greed and ego never leaves us and it reflects in everything we do...

These guys sound like state sponsored gang members. Who the commanding officers are need to be replaced. There's too much indiscipline with these guys. I wonder what's the criteria for hiring these guys.

A simple traffic stop that gets you a mere ticket. You turn it into huge ordeal. Now these guys face charges of assault, arson, destruction of government property, traffic violation etc.

You're quite right. It's been found that the fear of consequences after being caught is the single most important deterrent for crime and criminality in functional societies. Here, bad behaviour is repetitive because the institutions that should apply sanctions and punishments are weak.
