Some 20 pilot whales were pushed back into the sea by sailors and locals after becoming stranded off the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka.

Several members of the Sri Lankan navy and city residents rescued a pod of the sea mammals from the island's beach near the historic city of Trincomalee on Wednesday.

A Navy spokesman, Chaminda Walakuluge, said people joined together to push the whales back into deeper waters after they washed up on the Sampur coast near the port.

You can see that its not only about a country's poverty index but the mentality of its people that matters in such instances.

Sri Lankan is poorer than Nigeria but they didn't murder the poor whales for food!
