The Obafemi Awolowo University Department of Student Affairs (OAU DSA) today 4th of June 2017 made a special release stating that all religious activities should be suspended in the halls of residence.
The release also commanded all students to either pray in their rooms or go to the religious ground.

The "Special Release" which was all in upper case read thus:

"This is to bring to the attention of all students that all religious activities is hereby suspended in halls of residence until further notice.

Any student that fails to comply will face immediate disciplinary action which may include revocation of studentship and expulsion.
Students are advised to pray in their individual rooms or move to the religious centre"

The DSA has wasted no time in executing this new order. There are reports that some members of the DSA and school security went to the two major hall mosques (Awolowo hall mosque and Fajuyi hall mosque) and destroyed all the temporary structures in it after sending the Students out of them.

The religious centre is fifteen to twenty minutes walk from the 'Awo' hall which is the most populated hall of residence on campus. Taking such a walk five times daily might be more of difficulty than ease for most Muslim students and many Muslim students have seen it as an attempt to stop them from observing their daily prayers.

However, there have been no reports of similar demolitions in any of the several 'hall' secretariats allocated the Christian fellowships.

It should be remembered that G.O Akinola, the Dean of the DSA has not been the best friend of the Muslim students since her arrival in office.
She once called the hall mosques a brothel.Could this be a 'diplomatic' step she is taking to eliminate those "brothels" from the school.

There have been claims and accusations of a 'christianization' agenda going on in the school, with the faculty of pharmacy not having any Muslim lecturer and many departments having just one or two Muslim lecturers.

_From the Nuur Compass, to the world..._

LED BY THE CHIEF IMAM _& CO_: WE WATCHED THEM ARRIVE IN COMMANDO STYLE...*

It was just another Sunday afternoon in Awolowo Hall Mosque yesterday, but this time it is in the holy month of Ramadan; the Muslim students were reading, some were relaxing with their heads on desks while others were engaged in various acts of worship. Nobody thought the shrill whistle that we suddenly heard pierce the serenity of the mosque from outside will be related to the mosque. But looking back now, indeed many found the whistle strange... It sounded too familiarly militaristic.

But we don't have to wait long for an explanation....

They stormed in. Led by the Chief Imam of OAU, Professor Sanusi (and some other Muslim community members), a potpourri of strange men and women suddenly filed into the mosque, screaming, shouting, stridently shouting orders and blowing their interminable whistle, many stepped on opened Qur'ans on the floor as they run in every direction.

Their shouts rent the air, ordering every one in the mosque to get out. Then they pulled out all sort of implements and started breaking doors, windows, pulling down fans and blackboards, cutting electric wires and...generally reminding someone of the wild.

Tongues wagging, eyes popped out, brothers were initially slow to comprehend the situation. It was just too unbelievable, here is the Chief imam of the campus leading a mostly Christian band of human juggernaut to desecrate the sanctity of the mosque.

We soon wake up soon, unarmed unlike them but fasting too. We surveyed outside, it was not surrounded, just Awo boys rushing out, lining to watch our spectacle of this unusual demolition team. People want to grab for books, but that was when the sledgehammer landed on the shelves, flying slivers of broken wood all around turned the smooth floor of the mosque into a maze difficult to navigate, we still thought these suddenly strange men can be reasoned with, if only to have a rethink about making a farce of our religion and personalities as Muslims in front of a non-believing world. But when the hardwood wooden dividers that was used to save the mosque from the distractions of football matches usually shown in Awo Cafe nearby came crashing down, we know it is hopeless, a troupe of sinister comedians have just landed in Awo to make a farce out of Islam and it's symbols in front of confounded Awo boys!!

Brothers walked out, now just content to be spectators themselves. Bloods are boiling though, but a whisper went around that we should maintain our peaceable nature to the last. We watched crashes after crashes and wood was almost flung in some nearby brothers' faces. When those with delicate electronics like laptops quickly reached to save their bags, we guess the slumbers on others lifted, for it soon dawned not waste even your tiniest needle to the crash of a random mace.

We watched and watched, the curious and even the Christians watch with awe. It was all over in twenty minutes.
Awo hall mosque lay in ruins.

We thank Allah they injured no one.

Where shall we place this in the pages of OAU Muslim students history? But life continues friend, it all ends with prayers for Allah to rectify them.

We soon congregated for our Asr prayer on the grass...

Monday 5th June 2017. We thank Allah we wake up today to an even better sunlight.

During the demolition in one of the hall mosques.

Edit

Well, firstly I'll like to appreciate the comments of all and sundry except the comments of AlBaqir, he is a shia and his enmity towards me and my religion is far from hidden, he even followed me so he can always say crap on my posts. I wouldn't spend any time in refuting him here, much work has been done to silence him. Anyone who wishes to read further on about his vulgar language, culture and creed should visit his profile and see for himself.

Secondly, many people have raised alarm on the potential of this post to ignite a war. Yes, it's true and they are right but I have to point out

Madam DSA is not (supposed to be) ignorant of the implications of her deeds and doings and what kind of reaction it may spark. The school security department has been labelled by many as incompetent because of its refusal to use brute force on the Muslim students in settling differences. It refused to be a tool in the hands of Dr Sanusi Abefe to satisfy his ego.

Alhaji Abefe said he must be the chairman of the shurah (Islamic electoral) committee and his decision would be final. The students refused saying that the students are old enough to conduct themselves and Dr Sanusi should maintain the role of observer. He was adamant and went ahead to elect some kangaroo excos, brought them to the mosques and tried to impose them on the students. The students unanimously rejected the kangaroo excos and since then Imam has been striving towards satisfying his ego by imposing his gang of incompetent excos on the students.

Many Muslim lecturers do not support him but only a few are bold enough to confront him. Only the security department has been cautious in handling the matter. Other departments have not been as cautious as the security department.

This maturity by the school security is what has maintained peace on the campus for generations. But the new Madam DSA seems to think the hard way is the only way!!

Religion and belief is a delicate matter and should be not be treated otherwise.

Ridhwaan Bnu Shi’th Wrote:

One after the other, I cross my fingers as this year marks the sixth year after the University of Ibadan Muslim Students went on rampage over mosque demolition in one of the halls of residence. The Students, in their thousands, took to the streets to protest this dastardly act, locking the university’s entrance main gate, thus barring both human and vehicular movement within and outside the campus.
That memorable day was indeed a watershed in the history of the relationship between the Muslim students and the university community.

Today, 4th of June 2017, not only marks the blatant pull down of two Mosques in the Obafemi Awolowo University by its management but also a cruel suspension of all Islamic activities within the walls of university’s halls of residence. This bold plot to infringe upon the fundamental liberty of the extremely meek Muslims of this university to exercise the second pillar of their religion was not received with a speck of resistance. Not even a sneer.

To bring two Mosques, one of which is unarguably the largest congregational Mosque in Nigeria if not in the entire West Africa, down during the month of Ramadaan is just one from the series of oppression that are routinely melted out on the Muslim students of the university. This clandestine development, compared with their historic decades of orchestrations against Islaam, actually speaks boldly that the authorities are in for a crackdown.

Before now, holding Muslim girls as hostage for being identified with Islaam in their dressing, victimization of students during examinations, scheduling of examinations to deny Muslims the weekly Jum’ah congregation were seen as their worst.

If all lecture rooms function as churches starting from 4:00 pm every day and full time chapels on Saturdays and Sundays, why on earth should the Muslims be denied access to just two mosques. The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University need to come out straight and pronounce the institution a missionary University.

At stark contrast to this infamous commitment of theirs, all places of worship are regarded sacred in Islaam. These doesn’t exclude churches, synagogues and temples. An attack on our places of worship is actually an attack on our lives. If only the non-Muslims can just reciprocate a shred of the tolerant they have always enjoyed from the Muslims, the world would have been a hitch free above for all. I have visited many Universities in the Northern Muslim dominated part of the country and seen the Christians enjoy an undivided fundamental freedom to exercise their religious duties. The federal government of Nigeria, should as a matter of urgency arrest this heightened high handedness on the side of the University authority.

Christianization agenda indeed. This story reeks of misrepresentation and falsehood. Whatever it is that you are trying to imply would certainly not fly. Never in this country has christians sought to deprive Muslims their God given freedom or right of worship. It does not happen in the SOUTH WEST, SOUTH SOUTH OR SOUTH EAST so don't come here with your rubbish ridiculous crap of some gang up or so.

Secondly, if any structure in the mosque was truly demolished with a malevolent intent then that would be wrong on all count. Such actions should never be taken without consultation with the Muslim associations and Cheif Imam. But what ever it is hold your DSA responsible and stop an unnecessary rhethoric about a Christian plot. Such rhetoric gets people killed.

*Even Covenant university that is a Christian university is known to quickly quash any form of 'Christian extremism'on Campus. And this is very important because sometimes some of these groups just want to be a law to themselves.

# Even a blind man can easily see you are too biased in this one-sided report. And that is how people like you incite hatred and cause religious fracas.

# Knowing your intolerable and extremist character, I can never believe whatever you've cooked up there until I read the other two party's reports (that of the Christian, and school authority) on the cause of the incidence or at least a moderate sensible Muslim report.

# On a side note; Is your creed not always maintain that you cannot revolt or complain against the authority no matter what their decision is?! Why should you table your grievances?

@AlBaqir, if at this your level you dont know the rulings on pictures in ISLAM then am sorry for your unborn generations. It is unanimous among scholars that the Hadith that prohibit taking of picture is authentic. Even your kangaroo scholars also attest to it. An exception is for an important thing like passport and others. The pictures taken are not meant to display the people's image but to show the destruction of the mosque of Allah by a TYRANT called Abubakar Sanusi Abefe. You lack the understanding of Islam that is why you are confused between Islam and "wahabi creed".

I expect you to address the main issue but rather you are blabbering. See another ignorance from you again? He wanted to imposed his own student's executives and the Muslim students rejected these incompetent people. Please get your fact right even if you cannot get your sense right.

This, as far as i'm concerned is a really good move. I lived in Angola and Awo halls and can say authoritatively that its just pure stupidity to have mosques that wake you up before 6am after you might have 'jacked' all night. I was sooooooo mad at this one thing so much so that i left awo for an apartment in mayfair despite the fact that i always wanted to live in the dorm.

No one should be able to use their 'rights to worship' to disturb fellow students. Good move by the DSA

edit: this should apply to every religious group at the uni.

@Op, what exactly do you want to get from this publication? Sympathy? Because I dunno the reason you failed to start your story from the beginning.
Some months ago some students (both male and female) were said to be locked up in the famous awo hall practicing what can be related to the beginning of Islamic extremism cos the ladies in the mosque was prevented from attending lectures all the In the name of prayer.
Since then the management has been planning to stop all religious activities in all halls residence.

Watery/one sided post, do you know how much trouble has come from having such structures around the halls of residence in the past? It is also very clear that the school is not comfortable with the kind of "independent community " you run behind the closed doors of those mosques.
The way forward for you guys is to settle your internal squabbles and engage the authorities at the negotiation table.

I schooled in ife and i'm a Muslim, I can authoritatively say that 'Muslims are sometimes the enemies of muslims' one thing am very sure of is that there's no way the D.S.A could have the effrontery to give such orders without the backing of highly placed muslim lecturers in the so called muslim community, because to the best of my knowledge, Christians are afraid of muslims especially when it comes to taking decisions against their belief. I just hope we all watch our intentions
before we act or comment on issues. because we all should have it in mind that posterity will judge us all.may Allah guide us. Amin

To the best of my knowledge, Christian students also gather in various halls of residence to observe prayer meetings on OAU campus and many Nigerian campuses. You guys can also demand for a secretariat if you don't have one yet.

But the truth is that you saw no need for the secretariat since you have created a space large enough for yourselves in the name of a mosque but which is not different from a brothel. I was on your campus some 12 years ago when a similar report of conversion of mosques in halls of residence to brothels was frowned at by the management. It was so bad then that some were giving birth in that strictly restricted area called a mosque, which was actually a mating arena.

I'm even surprised that your management has not outlawed such activities since then. It's obvious you pushed them to the wall as they must have tolerated you for long knowing how sensitive issues like this are in Nigeria. It's also apparent that they banned all religious activities in halls of residence, not because Christian students erred, but because of sex-hungry students like you who hide under the cloak of religion to satisfy your sexual appetite. It's just a matter of innocents who share the same space with sinners getting punished.

Best decision ever taken by any school authorities. We are too religious and we tend to deceive ourselves about reality. You send your children to uni to learn and gain recent knowledge, instead they chose to be a SU "daddy and mummy" and neglect their reasons for being there in the first place.
