protest will heat things up {remember 1999} patience is the best option now that a new governing council is in place, more salaries to be paid next week etc. Pray that they reach agreement.... What they are fighting for affects everybody.... It is for the good of the state, school, workers and students

Patience is good.
But too much of patience can lead us to what we didn't expect.
For instant. LAUTECH. lautech has patience till their strike up to one year.
And polyib is closing to three months now. Should we fold our arms and be looking like this?
Pls. Let Discuss on this issue.
Let make a step.

protest against constituted authority at this time? You will end up resuming June 2019 grin. This present strike is almost coming to an end. If the aspect that involves the state govt increasing the allocation to the schs is achieved, in the next 3 yrs+, there won't be any strike again except when students decides to cause...... Leading to forced holidays....

There is light at the end of this present tunnel and the light is gradually showing and will be brighter in few days time

The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has appealed to the striking state-owned higher institutions that his administration is prepared to increase their subventions.
The governor said this would be achieved as soon as government’s renewed efforts to improve its revenue-base begin to bear fruits.
Ajimobi, who made the appeal while inaugurating the governing councils of the tertiary institutions owned by the state, at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan sought the understanding of the striking workforce.
The affected institutions are The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa; College of Education, Lanlate; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki; Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo; and the College of Agriculture and Technology, Igbo-Ora.
The workers had embarked on strike due to irregular payment of salaries, which they blamed on the decision of the state government to reduce their subventions to 25 percent of the original sum.
The government had, in turn, emphasized that the dwindling accruals to the state, triggered by the pervading recession, called for belt-tightening measures, including a reduction in subventions to MDAs.
In his address to the new governing council chairmen, the governor had explained that it was wrong to tie payment of salaries of tertiary institutions to the discretionary subventions coming from the government.
He explained that it was the responsibility of the governing council of the institutions to mobilize revenue for the running of the institutions, including payment of salaries, while the government augments with subvention that it could afford.
Ajimobi said, “For varying lengths of time, the institutions have been shut down by the trade unions who are demanding prompt payment of salaries and allowances to their members. This is a challenging time in the lives of these institutions you are coming in.
“Let it be noted that the state government is not responsible for the payment of salaries and allowances to staff of tertiary institutions. The government is simply obliged to assist these institutions through the periodic release of subventions, as it is the global practice.
“The current recession in the state, in particular, has necessitated 25 per cent reduction in our traditional subvention figures since April 2016. This should hopefully be revised upward as soon as the economy of the state improves.”
The governor tasked the new governing council members to evolve new strategies towards rejigging the institutions with ideas and management strategies that would make each of them stronger.
To be self-sustaining, he challenged them to work out their survival and growth strategies through revenue generation from traditional sources and other ingenious means.
Ajimobi said, “We expect you to breathe a new lease of life into these institutions rather than come as a new set of problems in search of solutions.
“The governing council, as in all tertiary institutions, is the ultimate authority of the institution. Generally, you are responsible for the overall management of the affairs of the institutions and the deliberate promotion of their objectives.
“I am persuaded that you are equal to the task of actualizing the desire of this government. After all, it is usually in the character of the valiant to confront adversity head-on. I therefore implore you all to go forth and demonstrate creativity, commitment required to succeed in the onerous task ahead.”
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the Chairman, Governing Board of The polytechnic, Ibadan, Professor Adebayo Adeyemi, thanked the governor for counting them worthy of the assignments.
He promised that the councils would hit the ground running on resumption of academic activities at all the institutions, adding that short, medium and long-term strategies would be used to turn around the fortune of the institutions.
Adeyemi said, “On behalf of others, I want to appreciate the administration of Senator Abiola Ajimobi for taking time out and being meticulous in selecting members of these councils.
“I assure all the people of the state that normal academic work will start soon in all the institutions as we all have met before this inauguration to discuss and find solutions to this; and also to find short, medium and long-term strategies to help drive knowledge economy in Oyo State.”

Oyo workers to begin three-day strike Wednesday

The joint session of the Oyo State Executive Councils of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and the Joint Negotiation Council said workers in the state would begin three-day warning strike from Wednesday, in solidarity with their colleagues at the six tertiary institutions belonging to the state.

Workers at The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo; Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora; The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki; and College of Education, Lanlate have been on strike over non-payment of their salary arrears and reduction of government subvention to the schools to 25 per cent.

Chairman of the state chapter of NLC, Waheed Olojede, who spoke after the meeting of the unions’ executives in Ibadan, said the strike was also called to protest the sacking of 256 workers at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, and other issues affecting health sector as presented by the Joint Health Sector Union.

stop spreading expensive rumours, this is costly to those that heed to it and how would you start first semester (not second) without registration of courses etc? This is not possible even in primary schools

Oyo workers begin three-day strike today

The joint section of the Oyo State Executive Councils of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress and the Joint Negotiation Council said workers in the state would begin a three-day warning strike from today (Wednesday) in solidarity with their colleagues at the six public tertiary institutions in the state.

Workers at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa, The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, and College of Education, Lanlate, have been on strike over non-payment of their salary arrears and reduction of government’s subvention to the institutions to 25 per cent.

The Chairman of the state chapter of the NLC, Waheed Olojede, who spoke after the meeting of the unions’ executives in Ibadan, said the strike was also called to protest the sacking of 256 workers at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, and other issues affecting the health sector as presented by the Joint Health Sector Union.

Olojede said, “Workers in the state-owned tertiary institutions have been on strike since November 2, 2017, and their matters have not been addressed up to date. We had two separate meetings with the government and they yielded no result hence the people remain on indefinite strike. We have written a series of letters to the government to give reasons why 100 per cent salary payment should be granted to workers in tertiary institutions.

“That led to a meeting with government on November 7, 2017 led by the Secretary to the State Government, Olalekan Alli, where we demanded that a separate committee be put in place to look critically into the issue of administration of workers and the labour movement and labour was asked to send representatives to be members of that committee.

“When labour waited for long, and no action came from government, we demanded another meeting which was  held on January 9, 2018, but the meeting ended not producing the desired result. And that shows that government appears to be insensitive to the plight of workers in tertiary institutions in the state.

“And so desired is our understanding of the fact that an injury to one is an injury to all, if today workers in the tertiary institutions are suffering this kind of hardship from the government, it should attract the attention of the entire labour movement. More so, a lot of other issues remain unresolved by the labour movement in the state.”

OYO, LABOUR LEADERS OPEN NEGOTIATION OVER STRIKE

Top officials of the Oyo State Government and labour leaders were, on Friday, locked in a five-hour meeting aimed at resolving the dispute that triggered a three-day warning strike by the state workforce, which ended on Friday.

Leading the government team was the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli, in company with the Head of Service, Mr. Soji Eniade; Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Seun Abimbola; Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, among others.

On the labour’s large delegation were the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Waheed Olojede; State Secretary, Mr. Kofo Ogundeji; President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Mr. Titilola Sodo; and State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Niyi Akano, among others.

Addressing journalists at the end of the meeting, Olojede said that the deliberation was fruitful and that it demonstrated the sincerity of the government to resolve the dispute, adding that the meeting would continue on Wednesday, next week.

He, however, directed workers to resume at their duty posts on Monday, following the expiration of the warning strike, which was in solidarity with the sacked 256 workers of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, primary school pensioners and striking workers in the six state-owned tertiary institutions.

Olojede said, “We hereby direct workers to resume on Monday, January 29, 2018, as deliberations continue with the government. The issue of tertiary institutions, who are currently on strike, continues for negotiation next week Wednesday.

“We will continue to rub minds with the government on how best to make the current industrial peace in Oyo State sustainable. We thank our members for their strict compliance with our directives. We urge them to go back to work on Monday.

“We have discussed extensively and negotiation and consultation for the purpose of resolving the matters that led to the strike are still on-going.”

On his part, the SSG restated the commitment of the state government to the welfare and wellbeing of the workforce, stressing that it had all along operated an open-door policy with the labour to enhance a mutually-beneficial relationship.

Alli said, “We have discussed extensively on the issues that brought us to this table, which culminated in the three-day warning strike. As you would expect, the government’s door is always open for dialogue and that is what this meeting today has demonstrated.

“We sincerely believe that with the commitment that brought us to this meeting today, which we are adjourning until next week Wednesday, an end is in sight to the dispute. We are determined to sustain our robust relationship with labour.

“On both sides, we remain committed to the advancement of this state, given the spirit of understanding that we have all demonstrated here today. Let me assure the citizens of the state and the workforce that there is no cause for alarm. We are resolute in ensuring that the industrial peace in the state is disrupted.”
