Religious violence erupts again in Jos on Tuesday, 24-hour curfew declared
By AHMED SAKA

Religious violence between Christians and Muslims erupted again Tuesday in central Nigeria, and the state government called for more military units to enter the city where rioters have killed at least 27 people.

Security forces issued a 24-hour curfew after police and soldiers tried to contain the violence with roadblocks and searches but apparently failed. An Associated Press reporter could see smoke rising from the north side of Jos and could hear the sounds of gunshots echoing along the streets.

The rioting began Sunday after Muslim youths set a Catholic church ablaze. Witnesses said rioters armed with knives, homemade firearms and stones attacked passers-by and fought with security forces, leaving bodies in the street and stacked in local mosques.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Yakubu Lame, issued a statement Tuesday blaming the violence on "some highly placed individuals in the society who were exploiting the ignorance and poverty of the people to cause mayhem in the name of religion."

Jos, the capital of Plateau State, has a history of community violence that has made elections difficult to organize. Rioting in September 2001 killed more than 1,000 people and Muslim-Christian battles killed up to 700 people in 2004. More than 300 residents died during a similar uprising in 2008.

The city is situated in Nigeria's "middle belt," where dozens of ethnic groups mingle in a band of fertile and hotly contested land separating the Muslim north from the predominantly Christian south.

While religious violence does happen in Nigeria, it normally has its roots in local issues, rather than influence from international extremist groups.

Sani Mudi, a spokesman for the local imam, said there were about two hours of fighting on Tuesday morning.

"We could hear gunshots all over the area," said Mudi, who said he saw police moving about the area with soldiers from where he was hiding inside his home.

Mohammed Larema, a local police spokesman, said that security forces had brought the fighting to a halt and that the situation was under control.

However, the state government called for additional military units to enter the city. A major general for a Nigerian armored division toured part of Jos on Tuesday to see what would be needed.

"The situation is bad and the federal government is yet to deploy the troops requested," said Gregory Yenlong, a state spokesman.

Mudi, the spokesman for the local imam, has said 22 people died Sunday and more than 300 people were wounded in the fighting. Five others died Monday from their wounds, Mudi said.

Local Red Cross officials have said that 5,000 people have been displaced by the rioting.

CRISIS in Nasarawa Gown area of Jos, the Plateau State residence flee for safety

Medical personnel battle to save life of one of the victims

http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jan/19/300.html

JOS —NOT less than 1,500 internally displaced persons have taken refuge at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, regional academy in Jos, following another round of violent crisis that erupted in the Nasarawa Gwom district of Jos, Plateau State capital, weekend.

They are facing food crisis except they return home soon. Security forces have cordoned off the affected area to prevent a spill to other parts of the city

Meanwhile the Police Affairs minister, Dr. Ibrahim Yakubu Lame and the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, have condemned the clashes saying Nigerians have had enough of senseless killings, while Plateau senators demanded the release of white papers arising from commissions of enquiry into past episodes of violence in the State regretting that repeated outbursts of violence were giving credence to the enlistment of Nigerians on the terror list by the United States. Police and troops were deployed in the area yesterday.

victims

The NDLEA Commander in Plateau, Mr. Ralph Igwe, told newsmen in Jos that many of the victims complained that their houses had been burnt. He said: “Those whose houses were not burnt are afraid of molestation by hoodlums.

They are feeding themselves. We are constrained by the lack of fund to provide their immediate needs, because we didn’t anticipate the crisis.”

Igwe said there might be food crisis in the camp, except normalcy returned, noting that the displaced persons had exhausted their foods. He said the state government’s delegation and officials of the Red Cross Society had visited the camp, but had yet to supply any relief materials.

“Many of the children who slept outside, yesterday, in the cold, were coughing this morning,” he added, and called for humanitarian assistance from well-meaning organizations. Most of the affected persons alleged that those who attacked them in the Rikkos area of the city, were people they had lived peacefully with for several years. They appealed for the supply of water and food items by well meaning Nigerians and organizations.

A correspondent who visited Murna Hospital in the Nasarawa area, reported that scores of injured victims were currently on admission. The Resident Doctor, Ibrahim Izam, told newsmen that he had treated and discharged more than 20 injured victims.

Security personnel on patrol

Normalcy is gradually returning to the city, with armed security personnel patrolling the major streets, while business activities were yet to pick up. Police and troops were deployed in the area on Monday and a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed after the clashes.

According to the residents, security forces searched cars and people on the streets for weapons.

Jos crisis: FG orders Onovo to fish out culprits • Jang, Lar, Dariye in closed door meeting
By Joe Omokaro (Lagos),Rotimi Akinwumi (Abuja)and Onoja Audu (Jos)

Abuja on Monday vowed to punish the perpetrators of the latest mayhem in Jos, and gave Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, marching orders to fish them out.

http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jan/19/407.html

Police Affairs Minister, Ibrahim Lame, said a good job is expected of the police to ensure that justice is done.

Lame blamed religious violence on highly placed individuals who exploit the ignorance and poverty of the populace in the name of religion and ethnicity.

He pledged that the government will no longer fold its arms and watch them destroy the economic and social fabric of the nation.

He assured the public and residents of Jos in particular that the law enforcement agencies are on top of the situation and have been put on the alert to check future occurrence.

Lame urged community and religious leaders to monitor the activities of people around them.

He said once community leaders do their jobs, the new community policing concept will help address internal conflicts in Nigeria.

Lame spoke in Abuja at the commissioning of trucks and motorcycles which are part of the equipment for the pilot crime control and prevention programme in seven cities picked across the country.

Onovo thanked the government for its commitment to police reform, and gave an assurance that all police equipment will be properly maintained.

In Jos, Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, promised that the perpetrators of the violence last Sunday will be brought to book.

He made the pledge after he met with former Governors Solomon Lar and Joshua Dariye.

Lar condemned the riot and called for calm, Dariye said it is unacceptable.

Police Commissioner, Greg Anyating, announced the arrest of 25 suspects on Monday, bringing the total number of arrests to 63.

He said three automatic rifles and 20 double barrel guns as well as bags of ammunition and cartages were recovered from the rioters.

He confirmed that Onovo has ordered the deployment of anti-riot mobile policemen, three more units of whom arrived Jos on Sunday night. They compliment the three already on the ground.

Anyating assured residents of Jos of police protection of their lives and properties, stressing that “peace is gradually returning to the city.”

Armed soldiers and policemen keep vigil at flash spots in the metropolis, especially around Congo-Russia, Nasarawa Gwom, Angwa Rogo, Bauchi Road, Tudunwada, and Rikkos.

State House of Assembly Speaker, Istifanus Mwansat, has recalled vacationing lawmakers to deliberate on the matter today.

Re: More Crisis In Jos Today by Tsiya(m): 10:19pm On Jan 19, 2010
Why such crises wont occur again?
This is the only country where masscares and genocides are traeted like normal riots and vandalism. The people in power have never been caught in this crises. Ever since 2001 I have never heard where a minister, senator or reps (even state legislators) as victims of such riots. It is the poor man that is left to his judgement.

I am sick and tired of this thing. It pains me to hear everytime there is crises in Nigeria, Jos in Particular

the most annoying thing, they know that Jos is prone to such crises and they do not have enough soilders and police on ground. But they will set up JTF in the Niger Delta, armed with the most sophisticated weapons and helicopters to protect some greedy oil company workers and oil company pipelines. There is no single Helicopter in the City. The amount of wealth, resources lost is unimaginable. People lost their lives, properties. Some become crippled physically, mentally and economically.

Re: More Crisis In Jos Today by Goldmind1(m): 10:39pm On Jan 19, 2010
I think at this point the good people of Jos would start sending the Hausa fulani settlers in their midst packing. How can a visitor start claiming another man's land?

And I advise all other geo-political zones not to accept the Hausa fulanis in their midst again. This people always have along time plan, say 20 to 30 years of chasing away the rightful owner and claiming the land. This is exactly what happend and is still happening in Sudan.

It is so sad that they are the most backward in Nigeria. Their leadership style has relegated this country to the likes of Yemen and Pakistan. Well, I still pray for Nigeria whenever anyone raises a prayer point, but I think this country cannot work except if there is a revolution, which will be bloody and will last long. The US, UK and the UN know that this is true. They have tried the peaceful method by removing Abacha and MKO, yet peace has not yet arrived. They may allow it to happen the rough way if things continue this way. We really need to pray that God'll do it in a way peaceful way, like the case of USSR.

Both of them are visitors save that Plateau people migrated to that area first before the Hausa/fulani. The hausa Fulani has been living there for over 100 years and their children were born there. Is that not their land too?

I am not justifying their action but I wanted to let you know that they have equal rights in Jos too. Did all Americans migrate to America the same day and year?. Some came 100 years later yet their grand children are all viewed as Americans without any form of segregation.

"This report is false and way off the mark.
As usual, the muslims who are better connected and more economically endowed have ensured that they pay to get false stories out faster than anyone else.
The crises started because a muslim bike man hit a christian girl in front of St Micheal Catholic church on sunday morning. On that street, muslims live on one side and christians on the other and as usual, the muslims had been trying to terrorize the christians out of the area. The argument that ensued after the accident was a good opportunity for the muslims to invade the church and begin to attack the christians during mass.
They then went on rampage and began to set fire on the christian homes in the area. Even after that, peace was restored that sunday, but of course, they had stock piled arms and made fake military uniforms for themselves over time and were quite eager to use them hence the monday night breakout."

saw this comment on sahara reporters and the VP has ordered the military to quench the riot in jos.

Jonathan orders troops to Jos religious crisis
January 19, 2010 08:56PM

With close to 200 deaths so far recorded as a result of renewed Muslim-Christian clashes in the central city of Jos in Plateau state, vice-president, Goodluck Jonathan has ordered troops to the state to restore peace.

National Security Adviser Sarki Mukthar told reporters that "the military have moved in concert with the police to normalise the situation" in the city. He also said the vice president had ordered security chiefs to "immediately move to Jos, to assess the situation".

Fresh violence broke out in the one of Nigeria's largest cities between Christians and Muslims early Tuesday morning after a day calm following violent attacks on Sunday. The state's commissioner for information, Gregory Yenlong announced a 24-hour curfew on the state and directed non-essential workers to vacate their offices.

Dead bodies
"We received 156 dead bodies this morning and another 36 this afternoon, in total we have 192 dead bodies" said Balarabe Dawud, the head of the central mosque in Jos.

The fighting had started on Sunday when some youth protested the renovation of a building damaged in a Christian-majority area during an earlier crisis in 2008 in which close to 200 lives were lost. Houses and vehicles were set ablaze during Sunday's violence and the state governor, Jonah Jang imposed a 12-hour curfew on the state capital that day. Police were deployed on the streets Monday to enforce the curfew invoked on Sunday and it appeared that peace had been restored to the city.

The Red Cross said more than a hundred people were seriously injured in the fighting and 3,000 people were displaced in Sunday's clashes.

Trapped
Unconfirmed reports from Kuru Jenta, a village on the outskirts of Jos claimed that the village had been set on fire Tuesday, and the Muslims in the village had been surrounded. It is unclear what their fate has been. NEXT also gathered that about thirty National Youth Service Corps members were holed up without food at a Christian corps member's fellowship building in Jos.

The National Youth Service Corp Director-General, Ismaila Tsiga had on Monday threatened to withdraw all corps members serving in Plateau state after the violence broke out on Sunday. Three male corps members were murdered in the state during the 2008 violent clashes.

Plateau state governor, Jonah Jang is expected to make a public address on Tuesday night.

What is the solution to this constant bloobath in the name of religion?

If you pretend that you don't know the solution, then I guess you possess a pitiable personality.

Stop decieving yourselves, ONE NIGERIA IS MORE FICTITIOUS THAN REAL. undecided

The bloodbath will keep going on, and we will be looking at the already dead Federal government to salvage the situation. Maybe If you were in Jos and was attacked, you will understand how alien you are in your surpposed country.

Sad how you can just talk without thinking. We are all affected, we have all lost people, friends relatives, houses and cars? Will you be happy if i am killed seeing that i fall into the catergory you mentioned? Do you have any idea the hell, fear and loss we have gone through since 2001? Haba Fhemmy, I have such respect for you, Ifs an unfair statement. For your information, we lost four relatives to the first crisis and we fall in the catergory above? Why can we just see everyone in leadership as bad and wish so much evil to them? Do you even know this people you wish death for? If God says any of us will die in the crisis, we will, but its sad for you to say such, i expected much more from you. The first crisis I was still in school, was trapped for 4 days, feed only on maize from a farm, then no GSm, My father was on his way from Abuja, almost burnt, was rescued by some students who had enjoyed his schoolarship. Imagine the hell my family went through not knowing if i was alive and not being able to reach me, as soon as they could come out they sent search parties to coame and look for me and so as many people as they could rescue from my school.
Please think before you post, This can happen to anyone.
Who told you, it does not affect the elites? Who told you we live like that in plateau, in Plateau we carry each other, you are up you carry those down
