Federal Government Food Distribution Programme For The Northeast

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, June 8, 2017, while flagging off the Federal Government Quarterly Food Distribution Programme for the Northeast.

*Quarterly Food Assistance: delivering Sorghum, Maize, Soya Beans, and Rice to victims of the Boko Haram insurgency

*Target is not only Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), but also Returnees and Host Communities (There are 14 million people in need of food assistance in the Lake Chad Basin, just under 2 million of them are IDPs) in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi and Gombe States.

*30,000 Metric Tonnes will be distributed this quarter, targeting 1.8 million beneficiaries.

*All the food to be distributed is locally grown i.e. within Nigeria.

*1,032 trucks will carry out the distribution across the region, translating into jobs for drivers, drivers’ assistants and loading/offloading labour.

*The distribution is being done with partnership support from international partners such as the UN, World Food Programme, and Nigerian partners: NEMA, the Military, the Police, other security agencies and State Governments in the region.

*Instead of food queues distribution will happen door-to-door, using a voucher system that will both make the process of relief distribution transparent, as well as improve our own data collection, for planning purposes.

*The Food Distribution Programme is part of a larger Government Food Security response that will see the delivery to IDPs and Host Communities of seeds and other agricultural input, and farming implements, to enable them return to farm and grow their own food. This will be supported by the ongoing efforts of the military and other security agencies to de-mine and secure the farms.
