So most of you must have been hearing Takata left, right, centre and if you're wondering please ponder no more I will tell you. It's a Japanese company that mostly designs and manufactures airbags for almost all the major brands in the auto industry, but alas they've been on the news quite a lot in the last three years or so and you should know by now... For the wrong reasons!
So here's what happened, the airbags made a couple of years ago are now bursting and when that happens, some metal fillings (shrapnel) shoots out and hits occupants of the vehicle especially those in front. This has led to some serious injuries and deaths in extreme cases, like the one recorded in India where a pregnant woman was killed in a 2001 Honda Pilot after the airbag accidentally deployed. Another in Malaysia, was a 44 year old woman killed in a minor crash after the airbag inflators had ruptured, she died instantly.
If you run a google search of affected brands, you'll see that Honda/Acura models between 2000 and 2003 are high on the risk index, and research shows that more premature airbag deployments have occurred in regions of higher temperatures (tropics). But as you already know, such things usually flies over the heads of our government agencies responsible for our health and safety. Other countries have been carrying out campaigns recalling affected vehicles and repairing or replacing them for free as this is the largest recall in the history of the automobile industry.
