Some Common Mistakes and Innovations in Salah (Prayer)

Below are a few mistakes in Prayer as found around Lagos, Ogun and some other States in Nigeria. It may/may not occur in some states/countries.

1. Negligence when it comes to cleaning properly and patience (for the drops) after passing urine!

2. Praying at a particular fixed time which may sometimes be wrong. The Prayer times changes periodically. An Example is fixing Asr and Ishaa time as 4pm and 8pm respectively!

3. Saying out loud/silent the intention for prayer (or Wudu) or spreading both palms to recite the intention before Solah. (Intention is in the mind, not said.)

4. Not using the Sutra when applicable and properly.

5. Washing the limbs more than three times during wudu (ablution).

6. Putting water in the mouth, Looking up and pointing towards the sky while reciting the Shahadah (testimony of faith) after completion of wudu. (Only reciting the Shahadah is from the Sunnah).

7. Not aligning the rows well during Solah touching the feet and shoulders with one another’s’ while facing the Qiblah.(Toes faces Qibla).

8. Putting the hands by the sides while praying Solah. (The Sunnah is to place the right hand on the left hand on the chest)

9. Making Sujood by making the forehead only touch the ground without the tip of the nose touching the ground with it.

10. Combining two or more Solah together later in the day when one has free time.

11. Putting the entire arm on the ground or making the arm touch the knee during Sujood.

12. Looking around during Solah. (The Sunnah is to look at the place of prostration and while on Tashahud, it’s Sunnah to look at the pointed/shaking finger).

13. Not saying the Takbir before moving to the next Solah position (as at when necessary).

14. Distracting others with one’s fingers during Tashahud. (The Sunnah is to form a circle with the thumb and third finger & shake the second finger slightly up and down during Tashahud).

15. Saying the Tasleem to the right and left sides. One does not need to nod at the middle before facing the right or nod before facing left in doing this.

16. Making group du’a at the end of each Solah. (We cannot find any reference where after each salah the Prophet would make a du’a and the Sahaba will repeat ameen after him. After Solah, dhikr and Individual du’as are found in the authentic narrations).

17. Making group chanting of Laa ilaaha illallah… at the end of each salah. (Sunnah is to say Astagfurllah x 3, and other authentic duas, including kalima on personal basis).

18. Praying Salatul Tasbeeh. (No authentic hadith talks about this kind of prayer).

19. Fixing Nawaafil that are not established from the Sunnah especially in Ramadan. (Eg. Ramadan 25, 10 Rakahs, 5 Salams, Recite Inna aataena kali kawthar 7 on each standing. Recite Yaa Rasaq 100 on completion! Or outside Ramadan eg Nisfush-Shaaban Nawaafil, etc.

20. Saying aameen to prayers or sending blessings to the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa salam) loudly during obligatory prayers.

Gathered by a Slave of Allah (May Allah Pardon him and us all. Aamin).
