To get her to go out of her way to do something for them. On the issue of funds appropriated in the 2016 budget for projects in the southeast, the House of Representatives has said that "the Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Mr. Babatunde Fashola peddled inaccuracies, misleading and calculated mischief about the 2017 budget, maintaining that Fashola’s ministry did not spend a kobo on the Second Niger Bridge in the 2016 budget as was allocated to his ministry then."

The Chairman of the Committee on Media and Publicity in the lower chambers, Rep. Abdulrazak Namdas, said that "the minister's statement tended to blackmail the National Assembly and was fixated on matters of power rather than issues that would benefit Nigerians." He further averred that, because part of funds allocated to Second Niger Bridge in 2016 was returned at the end of the year, the national assembly reduced allocation to the project in the 2017 Budget by N5 billion. He stated that "in the 2016 Budget, N12 billion was appropriated for the Second Niger Bridge but not a kobo was spent by the ministry. Not a kobo was spent and the money was returned." Mr. Namdas also stated that "The ministry could not provide the Committees of the National Assembly with evidence of an agreement on the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) or a contract for the Second Niger Bridge.''

So for a minister -who by law suppose to serve the interest of all citizens of the country irrespective of tribe, religion or creed- to act in such a callous, hateful and discriminatory manner should be a source of worry to all. Truth be told, 3 of the 5 states in the southeast are in the top 10 states that contribute more money into the federation accounts than any other section of the country that receive most of the Federal government benefits. So why should they be treated any different than any other section of the country? And to hear some people in this forum bare their "tribal and hateful" fangs simply because their part of the country is not on the receiving end of this unjust treatment, very appalling to say the least. This single action by the minister albeit based on hatred of the people of southeast part of the country, helps to undermine progress and development of Nigeria as a country.

Let me end this piece with this quote from Fred Douglas and remind these people that "Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where anyone tribe is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe." So Nigerians irrespective of their tribe or religion should put their very narrow minded views and hatred aside if they want the country to move forward in unity and progress. All the countries that gained independence after Nigeria are on a much better footing progress wise than Nigeria. Nigerians should be asking themselves where did they go wrong?
