Happy Sunday!

It's unarguable, owning a car in a city like Lagos makes life better and easier. And as a young man under 30, this is highly needed.

To this end, I'm committing to save up money over the next months to get a car, preferably, a Nissan (Maxima or Altima).

Ceteris paribus, I'm looking at saving 100k each month, with an average of 600k at the end of the year...You think that can get me something nice?

Well, I'm optimist that I can make the cash even the year runs out...I pray everything good I intend or outlook will come to fruition, real soon.

Got any thought on this?

Its a good idea! Owning a car isn't the problem but maintenance is! Hope you have something to fall back on when the road gets any rougher being a young man for that matter! Best of luck!

Thanks.

You just asked a critical question that got me thinking again about the reason for this car.

Primarily, it's for ease of mobility. I'm an entrepreneur/freelancer and sometimes need to be on road. These days, I feel terrible using public transport (the stress), hence, I've been doing loads of Uber and Yellow Taxi. When I look at the cost of those on a weekly basis, I shake my head, considering that some my friends with car spend less.

My other reason will be for status upgrade. As you know, people have a way of sizing you up base on the things you have or do not have. So, I'd be thinking having a ride, gives a better lift and could fast track more business goodies.

More so, I think having a ride shouldn't be a luxury. Out country has only made it so. Just snapped myself off that useless Nigerian thinking. If I have the money today, bros, I go go buy am oooo.

ok you should save and buy it then... But be aware of the cost of maintenance ... Let that not elude you.

Hmm!

Such a valid point - maintenance [THANKS!].

What do you mean by having something to fall back on when the roads get any rougher?

A young man, around 30years, not married without 5 children already probably lives alone mercury villager/Nissan quest HABA.

Op, if Nissan is your choice, you are attempting a model you will not be able to take care of on the long run except you intend buying relic models. Try

Nissan sunny, Almera, primera, sentra start from small and grow big

young man, do not set your self up. Do not be deceived by the great looking interior, and the fact that you see them moving around.

Your budget will get you the 2003-2006 max it will be nigerian used, and I can assure you by the time the car is done with you, you will understand the inner workings of a modern day vehicle.

You will also sell it for about 250-350k and appreciate the money.

If I could ask, how did you arrive at the maintenance comparison against Toyota? Ever/currently used a Toyota product?

Una no go kill pessin with laff grin

My Naija used 4Runner

1) New tires N200,000 (Firestone, not some Chinese crap).

2) New tie rods, ball jints and other suspension bits N100,000 (could havae spent much less but I don't take chances/skimp on quality with my vehicles).

But I will not sell my Naija used 4Runner, she serves a purpose but I can relate to what you wrote.

I hail all of una on how you abuse use cars in Nigeria.

Savage but true.

Op, I once owned a mazda years ago. I bought it for 600k, I don't think there's any mechanic workshop I don't know in Ladipo while I spent a fortune on it. I later sold it for 250k, I got 230k because the seller took 20k as commission.

My friend, Olabosipo once owned a Nissan Altima or Maxima (whichever one, they are all crap)

I mentioned his name because he's on nairaland.. Don't worry, when he sees this mention, he might be magnanimous enough to tell you what he went through. U'll be educated.

It's your first car, don't let yourself go through what some of us went through, the Mazda wasn't my first car and I still suffered perpetual misery.. Danfo and yellow cabs won't kill you for now.. Save for a full year or more, if you have to and buy you a stressless vehicle. Bear in mind that I said 'stressless'.. Every car must stress you at one point or another..

Your experienced friends who own cars and spend less on transportation weekly haven't told you how much they dole out on the side for maintainance even on their seemingly reliable cars much less a freshman like you.
