Evil has always and will always be part of our daily life. There have been crimes; murder, kidnapping, fraud, thievery and corruption since inception and such is not a new thing in our world.

The quest & love of money—The foremost cause of major atrocities—has killed our conscience and buried our compassion. We tend to forget that there are other legal ways to earn money. No wonder the bible says "The love of money is the root of all Evil."

The rate at which it is being perpetrated in recent times has become increasingly alarming. Seeing graphics pictures of gruesome murders online or in the newspapers has now become a routine to us even though it is quite disturbing. The recent is of the notorious Badoo cult group which operates mainly in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state.

Badoo, nickname of famous Nigerian rapper and YBNL Nation founder Olamide was initially given to a serial rapist who operated in ikorodu before he met his untimely end. Then it evolved into the sobriquet of the infamous dreaded cult group.

Ikorodu, a city in north-east Lagos State, Nigeria. Located along the Lagos Lagoon, home to about 550,000 persons has been under threat since the menace of this group started about a year ago. Every night fall is accompanied by fear, fear of being the next victim of this terror gang. Sound sleep is almost a thing of the past in this area.

Their modus operandi is to break into unsecured and vulnerable apartments at ungodly hours naked & lubricated, armed with 'grinding stone' used to smash their victims' head and handkerchief to clean off their blood. No one has ever survived their attacks except for one pastor who had his head smashed, but for the timely intervention of his wife who alerted neighbours and was rushed to an hospital, he would have died. They wipe out an entire family in any of their attacks.

After enduring the Menace, killings, horror nights coupled with the failure of the police to handle the situation, the residents of Ikorodu have taken it upon themselves to mete out jungle justice on persons suspected to be a member of the cult which has only deteriorated the situation.

Jungle justice, a form of extrajudicial killing. Punishments of suspects may vary from extreme humiliation, severe beatings and in most cases especially in Nigeria, death by burning. This only occurs when the dysfunctional and corrupt judiciary system of a country has lost all credibility, reliability and trustworthiness.

Even though their plight is understandable to a point, it does not in anyway differentiate them from these blood sucking demons. The chances of executing innocent people is very high as little, unconvincing or no evidence is available to 'justify' the killing.

The case of 'Aluu four' killing comes to mind. Four vibrant young men of the University of Port Harcourt, were all lynched after they were falsely accused of theft. The most recent is the killing of a young Mc comedian Paul who was said to have ventured into ikorodu around 1am that fateful day with his mechanic in an SUV to tow his vehicle and was accosted by vigilantes who mistook them for badoo members. Their vehicle was set ablaze and they were hacked to death, mutilated and their charred remains set ablaze. Imagine the sorrow, the pain, agony, emotional trauma and the void forever left in the heart of the families of these victims.

Two wrongs can never make a right. Killing a fellow human over 'mere' suspicion is very wrong. If the justice system has failed, it is our duty to voice out and compel the government to man up to their responsibilities.

Thankfully, a statement which was long overdue was recently released by the Lagos state governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode in which he declared total war on this cult group. The government should do everything possible to reinstate the trust and confidence which the people have long lost in the government back into their hearts by ensuring peace, tranquility, justice, law and order is brought back to this community before it plummets into a total state of anarchy.
