it is actually very true. it is a phase of rabid infection that displays the attack of the virus on the nervous and brain tissues.
Resulting in extreme salivation and thirst at the same time with inability to swallow.

Barking like a dog?

Yeah. the noise of such a delirious patient, is often equated with a dog bark.
the truth is, it's not a bark. the spasm in the throat, and the nervous system damage caused that.

with immediate treatment there is a survival chance greater than when not treated.

I was bitten by a cat in April 2008. On the 7th day I experienced the tingling sensation at the site of the bite. I received the rabies injection on the 7th and 8th day and by God's grace am still alive.

Not to sound off a false alarm. But the rabies virus has a very long incubation period. Up to about 7 years+ and above.
You did the right thing, and you'll be very fine. Steer clear of stray cats, dogs and other flesh eating mammals.

If you got bitten by a dog with rabies, you will after 7days start barking like a dog and then die

How many grew up with dis kin story?
I follow believe that nonsense. There was something called "black stone" my mother had. She said it was brought from Israel by people who went for pilgrimage. When placed on a dog bite, it will suck out all the poison, after which it is soaked in liquid milk for cleaning.

Yea..apparently that's the end result if the bite is not urgently and well taken care of.
Thanks.

Nice and informative article OP. I would have also wished you mentioned something about whether or not a person infected by rabies will begin to bark as a dog as one of the effects.

I've not seen it, I will check it out now. I know squirrels and bats give rabies too and the symptoms (hydrophobia, thirst for water and loud hiccups) are the same with a dog bite. So when a rabid bats bites you hahn wink , you will start flying like one or start feeding on insects too. grin grin

Lol...I have wasted my MB on the tongue seen the video. I think my thoughts are well echoed by Mr.Victorious especially his number 1,3 and 4 points.
TheVictorious:
IT IS HARD NOT TO JUST BELIEVE THIS VIDEO BUT THERE'S SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG HERE.
GOOD THINKERS, PLEASE REASON WITH ME:

1. Dogs bark because they communicate that way; not because of the rabies virus.

2. Besides rabid dogs, there are other sources from which one can contract the same rabies (e.g. Squirrels); will they also make the infected individuals bark like dogs or communicate like the animals that infected them?

3. "Rabid dogs don't bark". So why should humans who contracted the disease from the animals do so??

4. Immediately after seeing this video; I quickly conducted a search to see if this has been reported elsewhere; and the only things I saw were a senseless Youtube video recorded in Pakistan that can at best mess with gullible people's IQ, and rumors from some unreliable sources. Nothing like that on any research publication, nothing on Center for Disease control (CDC), nothing like this has been reported by international health agencies or any reputable source.

5. If truly rabies is what caused this, then what could be the underlying mechanisms or could there perhaps be other viruses transmittable from dog-bite that has not been isolated or known yet?
I have seen some videos of people bitten by rabid animals and they all exhibit same symptoms of Hydrophobia and Aerophobia which is backed by reputed medical sources not barking like a dog. That fear of water even dey scarier to me than this barking business. Here is a 45 secs video link (hydrophobia) from an institute of infectious tropical diseases in Vietnam, you will pity the man:

Not stated in that particular report but saw another report about the common occurrence in Asia, where cases of people sounding like that are recorded.
Also there is another reported case in Namibia last year, where the patient was barking.Check the link below

Serendip:
What is rabies?
Rabies is a disease transmitted from animals to humans, which is caused by a virus. There are two clinical manifestations of rabies – frantic and paralytic. Frantic rabies is most common form of human rabies.

Early symptoms can include fever and tingling at the site of exposure.

These symptoms are followed by one or more of the following symptoms: violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, fear of water, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness.

Once symptoms appear, the result is nearly always death.

The time period between contracting the disease and the start of symptoms is usually one to three months; however, this time period can vary from less than one week to more than one year.

The time is dependent on the distance the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system.

It is caused by lyssaviruses, including rabies virus and Australian bat lyssavirus.

It spreads when an infected animal scratches or bites another animal or human.

Saliva from an infected animal can also transmit rabies if the saliva comes into contact with the eyes, mouth, or nose.

What should not be done with an animal
bite wound?
Avoid:

Applying irritants to the wound such as chilli
powder, plant juices, acids or alkalis.

Covering the wound with dressings or bandages.

How does rabies develop in humans?

After entering the human body, the rabies virus progresses from the innermost layer of tissue below the human skin (called subcutaneous tissue), or from muscle, into peripheral nerves (i.e. the nerves in the body which are outside the brain or spinal cord).
The virus migrates along nerves to the spinal cord and brain at an estimated speed of 12–24 mm a day.
The infected person exhibits behavioural changes and clinical signs when the virus reaches the brain. The incubation period ranges from a few days to several months, and can be as long as 1 year.

Globally, dogs are the most common animal involved.

More than 99% of rabies cases in countries where dogs commonly have the disease are caused by dog bites.

In the Americas, bat bites are the most common source of rabies infections in humans, and less than 5% of cases are from dogs.

Rodents are very rarely infected by it.

The virus travels to the brain by following the peripheral nerves. The disease can only be diagnosed after the start of symptoms.

Animal control and vaccination programs have decreased the risk of the virus from dogs in a number of regions of the world.

Immunizing people before they are exposed is recommended for those who are at high risk.

The high-risk group includes people who work with bats or who spend prolonged periods in areas of the world where it is common.

In people who have been exposed to rabies, the rabies vaccine and sometimes rabies immunoglobulin are effective in preventing the disease if the person receives the treatment before the start of rabies symptoms.

Washing bites and scratches for 15 minutes with soap and water, povidone iodine, or detergent may reduce the number of viral particles and may be somewhat effective at preventing transmission.

Only five people have survived a rabies infection after showing symptoms, and this was with extensive treatment known as the Milwaukee protocol.

cc: Lalasticlala -little education about this could help

Thank you for this piece:
1) Treat every dog bite as if it's rabid, even the one supposedly vaccinated. Every warm-blooded animal including humans can be infected and can transmit rabies. However, all families of dogs and cats and vampire bats are 'specialists' in transmission.
2) The FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT ACTION to take is RINSE OFF THE SALIVA with copious water (best done under running water) for at least 3 min.
3) Better still gently wash with soap or detergent.
4) Bleach agent can also be applied on the wound.
5) Take to a doctor for further treatment including possible vaccination with anti rabies vaccine.
