First GE locomotives arrive in Nigeria
05 February 2010

NIGERIA: The first five of 25 GE Transportation diesel locomotives have been delivered to Nigerian Railway Corp, the supplier announced on February 5. The rest will arrive in the second half of the year.

The order for the C25 EMPD locomotives to haul both freight and passenger trains was placed under an agreement signed by the Nigerian Ministry of Transport in May 2009. They are being built in Brazil by GE Transportation South America, with 7FDL engines of 2 500 hp supplied from the Grove City plant in the USA. GE said similar locomotives are in service in South Africa, but the Nigerian locomotives are designed to suit the axleloads and clearances on NRC's 3 505 km single track 1 067 mm gauge network .

'This represents an important step in GE Transportation's entry into the Nigerian marketplace', said GE Transportation President & CEO Lorenzo Simonelli. 'GE experts performed an extensive analysis on Nigeria's narrow gauge railway network, haulage requirements and traffic patterns to determine the best-fit locomotive.'

This will be another monumental failure in Nigeria. Tracks that were built by colonial govt so as to hurriedly exploit raw materials are the same tracks these monkeys want to utilise.
As for the NRC being in charge of the project, hahaha, i have no words. Five years from now those of us still alive will mention this rubbish as the waste of valuable resources.

GE and Transnet sign 100-locomotive deal
18 December 2009
Swaady Martin, Acting Chief Executive Officer of GE South Africa Technologies, and Pradeep Maharaj, Acting Group Chief Executive at Transnet.

SOUTH AFRICA: GE Transportation announced the signing of a contract with Transnet Ltd to supply Transnet freight Rail with 100 C30ACi freight locomotives on December 18. Deliveries are scheduled for 2011-12. The manufacturer says they will be the first diesel-electric locomotives with AC traction equipment in sub-Saharan Africa.

They are being supplied through GE South Africa Technologies (Pty) Ltd, which GE established with Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment company Mineworkers Investment Company in December 2008.

GE Transportation's Erie plant will produce 10 complete locomotives, while 90 will be supplied as kits for assembly by Transnet Rail Engineering as part of the South African government's Competitive Supplier Development Programme which aims to encourage industrial development.

'We worked closely with Transnet Rail Engineering to develop a comprehensive localisation plan that complements local strengths and transfers world-class skills and technology where applicable', said Lorenzo Simonelli, President & CEO of GE Transportation.

EMD, GE Transportation and Siemens had been invited to bid for the contract. An earlier tendering process had selected EMD and Sibanye Trade & Services as preferred bidder to supply 212 locomotives, but was cancelled after Transnet found 'procedural irregularities'.

There are about 1 200 GE locomotives in Africa, according to the manufacturer, including around 900 in South Africa.

NRC should just hand over rail system to a private company. There are 1200 of such locomotives in Africa and South Africa controls a staggering 900.The remaining 300 is for fools to share.Giant of Africa my foot.
Rail sytem will never improve until Fashola becomes president.

Rail in Lagos s not yet working we all agree, but construction on Light rail(more advanced than locomtive)will begin next month,
About Lagos stolen billion Tinubu and speaker of LSHA are behind it.The person comparing prices of projects of BRF and tinubu clearly shows that there is friction between them. The tinubu that has a case to answer with efcc
But assuming, fashola is not clean, then at least he is better than those who chop and chop and chop wothout doing anything,
Atleast, this locomotive is good better than nothin, as it is cheaper and government is also building advanced one, to CCECC
