Pandemonium broke today in the University of Benin as post-graduate students came out in mass for what was supposed to be a peaceful protest over the alleged extortion by the school.

Post-graduate students of the University Of Benin, Benin-city protesting the introduction of 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 for PGD, Masters and doctorate thesis fees respectively. The protest went south when members of the university of Benin security started beating the protesters (students) while trying to calm down the protest.

A peaceful protest turned strangely awful when school security on seeing the peaceful protesters decided to turn on them with heavy hands. The security men proceeded to collect all the phones of the protesting post-graduate students for fear of their acts leaking to the media. At the time of this report, most pg students have their clothes torn and their faces seriously battered beyond recognition.

The students who have been staging series of protest said they cannot afford to pay the N30,000 charges postgraduate diploma students; N60,000 for masters and N90,000 for Ph.D. students allegedly demanded by the institution.
The Public Relations Officer of UNIBEN, Michael Osasuyi said the fees were as a result of the decision of the University Council in 2016.

…….“ I want to assure the students that the matter is being looked into. The University of Benin has not increased fees. Whatever ever the students are talking about was a Council’s decision in October 2016 and not even the school fees or the tuition as the case may be. “It takes a lot to train postgraduate students and the University of Benin is poised at doing that which is very important and relevant,” Osasuyi added.”
