Recitation of Quran during Menstruation

It is permissible for a menstruating woman to recite Quran if she needs it according to the more correct scholarly opinion on condition that she does not touch it, and she may touch it with a barrier. Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa, 21/460, Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa, 26/191. The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas said: It is permissible for the menstruating woman to recite from memory without touching the Mushaf directly, if she needs to recite Quran so that she will not forget it. Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah, 4/232 Majmoo‘ Fataawa Ibn Baaz, 6/360, Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 123/27 , Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 123/21. (Haashiyat Ibn ‘Aabideen, 1/159; al-Majmoo’, 1/356; Kashshaaf al-Qinaa’, 1/147; al-Mughni, 3/461; Nayl al-Awtaar, 1/226; Majmoo’ al-Fataawaa, 21/460; al-Sharh al-Mumti’ li’l-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 1/291)

Menstruating woman may read tafseer (commentary) of Quran which is more than original Quran in texts. al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 1/267

Intimate during Menstrual Period

Intimate, and with the area between the navel and the knee, apart from the front or back passage is allowed, Ibn al-Qayyim said in Tahdheeb al-Sunan, commenting on hadeeth no. 2167 from ‘Awn al-Ma’bood: The hadeeth “Do everything except intercourse” clearly indicates that what is forbidden is only intercourse in the site of menstruation,..but everything else is permissible. The hadeeth which speak about the izaar (waist wrapper) do not contradict that, because that is a precautionary measure and it is better. Al-Mughni, 1/419. al-Mughni, 1/415, al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 242. Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 5/395, Al-Bukhaari (302) and Muslim (2293) Muslim (294), Sharh Muslim by al-Nawawi, and al-Mughni, 1/414

Entering Mosque during Menstruation

The majority of Jurists of the four schools of thought are of the view that it is not permissible for a menstruating women to stay in the mosque. They quoted as evidence for that the report narrated by al-Bukhaari (974) and Muslim (890) from Umm ‘Atiyyah who said: “He (the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)) commanded us on the two Eids to bring out the virgins and those who usually stayed in seclusion, but he told the menstruating women to keep away from the prayer-place of the Muslims.”

The scholars of the Standing Committee were asked (6/272): What is the ruling on a woman who enters the mosque when she is menstruating to listen to the khutbah only? They replied: It is not permissible for a woman to enter the mosque when she is menstruating or bleeding following childbirth… as for passing through, there is nothing wrong with that if it is necessary and there is no risk of her contaminating the mosque. Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 6/272 (5/398) , Fataawa al-Tahaarah, p. 273. al-Mabsoot, 3/153; Haashiyat al-Dasooqi, 1/173; al-Majmoo’, 2/388; al-Mughni, 1/195 al-Bukhaari, 324; Muslim, 890. Risaalat al-Dima’ al-Tabee’iyyah li’l-Nisa’, p. 52-53. Fataawa Noor ‘ala al-Darb, 2/678

Prayer rooms in the university residences and elsewhere do not come under the same rulings as mosques in every aspect. Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (5/170), Liqa’ al-Baab al-Maftooh, 22/27.

Menstruating women are not forbidden to enter Makkah or Madeenah only thing that they are not allowed to do is to circumambulate the Ka’bah. ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during the Farewell Pilgrimage and she got her menses before she entered Makkah, but he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not tell her not to enter the city until she became pure (her period ended)! Rather he told her to do all the rituals of Hajj except for Tawaaf around the Ka’bah, which she was to delay until she became pure. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Do everything that the pilgrims do, but do not circumambulate the House until you become pure.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 305; Muslim, 1211.

To be cont…Inshaa Allah

May Allah grant us understanding of His religion and accept it as an act of ‘ibadah.

Jazakallahu khair. This is hugely educative and informative for our ladies. However, they should (menstruating women) be reminded that the 5 daily obligatory prayers during their periods are waived by Allah in His mercy but the missed days of Ramadhan are not.

Point of correction @OP, the Arabic word 'abdu' means Servant or Slave, When it applies to the Holy Prophet or believers it mean Servant of Allah and not Slave of Allah as many people erroneously translate it. The Holy Prophet is d greatest Servant of Allah and He's very happy and proud to be called 'ABDULLAH' meaning The Servant of Allah AND NOT SLAVE of Allah. May Allah forgive all our shortcomings.
Allah is happy with HIS servants because they serve HIM in wirship and obedience, but Allah doesnt need a slave.
A slave is a person who is forced against his will to help another person perform his tasks, the master benefits from d slave but Allah has nothing to benefit from anyone of us , so we are Allah's servants and not slaves. Ma'-assalaam.
