Lagos roads, especially, can be specially tricky. One moment, your car is fine, another, it is scratched. However, does all of these mishaps require a repaint? Well, you may want to grade your options after reading this.

1. Car Damaging
The process of stripping( removing the car paint) the original paint is not car-friendly and the entire process is kind of damaging to the metal of the car. It can destroy the body of the car that no amount of paint may resolve it.

It is quite sad to see a car repainted loose its colour quickly. A repainted car never gives back the initial feel and look of the car.

People sometimes pick colour for repaint because it is catchy. This can be the biggest mistake in car painting. The repainting of a car is greatly discouraged because some colour repaint can do more bad than good. For example, a car repaint from white to black.

A black car will do the following
• Not only will the paint heat up to the temperature of the sun, but will cause the interior to heat up proportionately along with it.
• Black shows every nuance of paint flaws.
• Black car paint is the hardest color to keep clean.
It is advised that one keep to the manufacturer colour of the car.

Car stripping can sometimes be as dangerous as surgeries. Apart from the fact that they may destroy the car or make it look worse, it can make the car more dangerous to drive. Car repainting may, for example, leave the unbolted panels during stripping unbolted. This can affect the performance of the car generally. And can sometimes be quite dangerous as important part of the car may be left unbolted.
If your car is stolen, you may not be able to easily claim ownership. This is because your manufacturer’s colour is the registered colour. If the car is repainted and not duly re-registered, the risk of totally losing the car is pretty higher.

5. It Reduces the Cost of the Car
If you are thinking of reselling your car, it is advised that you avoid repainting it. The repaint would reduce interest and cost of the car immediately the buyer finds out about the repaint.

On a scratch of some part of the car, you can get a good car expert to do a repaint after carefully agreeing to the material and color to use. On the whole body of the car, i suggest you take it to the manufacturer. On a warranty, it shouldnt be costly

So if Danfo use my tinylight to do wedge in Lagos traffic, I should ship it back to Toyota in Kentucky for repair or replacement since Elizade never sold the tinylight. Or if the Mrs uses the bumper of her 2015 Cerato to argue with the gate, I should find Dana all the way from Gusau to Lagos since the car is covered by warranty abi?

Do we hav good paintshops in the country that can give the same quality of painting like the car manufacturers do? I think that's essentially what we need. Even in the US and Canada, people repaint their cars regularly without necessarily taking it back to the manufacturers. As far as we can get top notch paint shops we are good

Always localise your advice, not everything that happens in Europe applies here my broda, in short, for ur information Op, most of the cars you see in car shops are salvage cars purchased from Europe, fixed and repainted here and even you can't tell the difference.

@ Op please get your fact right, what you posted is someone's opinion. The question you should be asking is why people repaint their vehicle.


Most of the car's in Nigeria are not brand new, they have been used outside the country, that's why it's called a tokumbo car. You cant cheat nature, so it's natural that after using the car for sometime both in abroad(different owner) and Nigeria the colour will begin to experience this weather factors. e.g fading colour at the roof top of the car and some parts of the body, rusty spots, peeling. Then you begin to realize that the paint of your car has lost its luster even after a good wax job.

Human factors also contribute, e.g car accident, dents, the kind of water you use in watching your car (bore hole water that hasn't been treated) etc.


Even a brand new car isn't safe.The fact of the matter is every day on the road, your car or truck faces elements that wear away at your cars paint. The very light of the sun, road salt, and even acidic rain can fade away the color and damage your cars factory issued paint. Gravel, sand and basic road debris can chip and mar your cars paint. All of this damage over time diminishes your cars good looks and its value.

Finally, Oven baking your car increases the resale value. When you have an oven baked job, the resale value often goes up. How much depends on the paint job, style and colour or colours chosen. While you should pick out a paint or design that best suits you, it can make your car or truck easier to sell when that time comes.
