If I had my way, this bride price of a thing will be scrapped. Why pay for a woman's head? When she is not an object.

Yorubas hardly do bride price whatever. Even though there is a list drawn by bride's family, it's not filled with expensive stuff neither is it compulsory for the man to buy everything. Nobody inspects anything to see if it's complete or not. The bride will be asked by the MC to pick the most important item from all the stuff and she reaches for the Bible or Qur'an (depending on religion). Both families exchange gifts on trad ceremony, in some cases bride's family spend more than groom sef. No money is paid on the woman because they believe that their daughters are not for sale. I'd pick the Yoruba type of trad over Igbo any time any day. At least a woman can choose to flee from an abusive marriage without anyform of bride price returning wahala.

just to note: this only applies when the woman is not a virgin
