In one sense, I understand why we refer to some sins as normal: these sins are common, that is, a lot of people struggle with these sins. But this cannot be the whole story, because once people labeled a sin as “normal,” they no longer seem to take the sin very seriously.

It is often said that strength comes in numbers. It seems that, with sin, comfort comes in numbers. When we talk about certain sins as if they were normal, we should mean that strictly in terms of the frequency of those sins.

And, yes, sin is normal among humans because of the Fall. It is common. But the Bible teaches that this universal sinfulness is not normal (in the second sense of the word). We weren’t meant to live this way, even if everyone lives this way at some point in their lives.

We should never let our language bewitch us! Sin is never okay. Sin should never be taken lightly.

Is there any sin(s) you have normalised in your life today?

"Sin" is arguably the most useless and meaningless term ever because humans can't even agree on what sin is

Questions: Do Christians studiously avoid eating bacon, pork chops, and the ever-popular Easter Ham because eating pork is a "sin" in Judaism?

Do Christians avoid eating hamburgers because eating beef is a "sin" in Hinduism?

Do Christians refuse to eat cheeseburgers because they're a "sin" in both?

Are Christians strictly vegan because eating meat is a "sin" to Jains?

The reason I ask is to illustrate that a given religion's definition of "sin" only applies to those who are members of that religion, also only applies to whichever sect or interpretation of whatever holy book or instructions are therein, that's why Christians can't agree on what sin is, some Christians regard females wearing trousers as "sin" some say no its not a sin and both sets would read from the same book, this leads to an endless war of interpretation, "The bible" begs the question - which bible? There are many diverse and different, confused and internally contradictory editions of the bible that can be traced back as being written by men from the 4th century onward. The oldest bible ( Codex Sinaiticus" ) was written by a team of four men in the late 4th century and is significantly different to those we know today.

The Bible is the world's longest-running, most widely respected, and least reliable Rorschach Test. You can look in it and see anything you want to see, find anything you want to find, justify any pre-ordained conclusion you prefer, or validate any prejudice — because the Bible has it all: love, hate; revenge, redemption; war, peace; slavery, freedom; humility, arrogance; kindness, cruelty; and, as Mark Twain observed, “upwards of a thousand lies”!

Paradoxically, the contradictions in the Bible may have given it longevity. It means that as conditions change (slavery in and out of favor, for example), you can find Bible verses to show that it supports your worldview.

Isn't it convenient that after all these millennia, YOU finally interpret the Bible properly? grin

I shall consider this topic bringing two concepts - culture and religion, side by side for comparison. In the past, our cultures determined the moral grounds we choose to abide and thus, predicted our consideration of sin. In fact, culture and religion were bound. Today, our culture has largely been eroded by the adoption and proliferation of foreign religions to replace aspects of our beliefs.

As to why "sin" may have become normalized, I'll give an example. Divorce was culturally and religiously immoral (sinful) in the days of old but in modern times, its cultural immorality is almost non-existent whilst religiously, it is still largely immoral. The reason for this is that culture metamorphs through changes in peoples habits and experiences. However, the dictates of a religion were made to be constant and unchanged.

This is why in Nigeria, misappropriation of funds is culturally "allowed" but remains religiously repugnant (although in principle but not in practice) - No religion promotes stealing.

To conclude, the phenomenon of normalization of sin is affected by the view in which it is considered - according to culture or religion, and its primary audience - people.

Some believe God will hold our generation at a lower standard, if He didn't change His standard for Sodom and Gomorrah or during Noah's time, best believe it won't change for our generation.

Another sin is white lies. We have categorized lies and we've been told that All liars will end in hell, white liars, black liars, green liars, pink liars, sugar coating liars, all of them.

Well it depent, for afonjas that mines skull & other human parts is normal, coz it's their profession.

For politicians that has been looting the country & refused to give us basic amenities for over 50yrs here in Nigeria, is normal to them.

For police that police that continue to use uniform to rub us in our streets & highways, to them is normal.

All these, and many more are normal sins in Nigeria.
