Why We Don’t Investigate Income Of Those Who Make Donations– Bishop Of Nnewi by AdoraAmadi: 6:37pm On Aug 13, 2017
Following the attack St Phillips Catholic Church in Ozubulu has been subjected to after it was alleged that last Sunday's massacre in the church was a business deal gone wrong between two drug lords, one of whom had donated a building to the church, Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev Hilary Odili Okeke, has explained why the church does not investigate the source of income of those who give it offerings and donations.

Bishop Hillary Okeke said;

"If you get the information that the person is making his money through a dubious way in criminality, then you know what to do. It is not just a question of anybody who brings money or offers anything to the church, you go to the police and ask them to investigate this man’s source of wealth before you accept it. It is not done. If you do it, then even in the church we should not be accepting any money because evil people can come to church and give. It is God who knows if the person is giving the money from criminal or immoral source. God knows everybody and will reward the person accordingly. If you know that the person is a criminal that is when you now tell him, my man go and change.”he said

He also lashed out at some parishioners who have called for his resignation following the attack.

“They themselves will resign first. If they want me to resign, let them resign first. Let them resign. People just open their mouth and begin to say what they like and you should not listen to all that people say. If people who know everything will come out and bring any criminality upon the bishop, bishop will take action, the church will take action. Not that someone opens his mouth to say whatever he likes. They are free to say whatever they want to say.”

Oga Bishop, itz nt necessary 4 u 2 go out making enquiry abt d source of income donated, it's go na b difficult, 4 instance, sumone who stays over seas wl b difficult to verify. Al u need to do is preach against it, if Ur source of income is 4rm prostitute, robbery, kidnapping etc, "dnt gv it 2 d church",, even God wl bear u witness if dey disobey ur preaching.
Bt in a situation whereby, sumone wants to single_handedly build d church or renovate it, haba, Oga Bishop dat one 2much na, u gat to investigate abeg

I don't understand all this stupid noise and claptrap about investigating people's wealth. We have numerous "prominent" idiots in the public space who don't need any investigation because we all know that their wealth was illegally or illicitly acquired. Yet we celebrate them. Who has asked questions about Bola Tinubu's wealth? Or about Folorunsho Alakija's Wealth? Or Theophilus Danjuma? Or even the guy who calls himself the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai whatever, who is a mere career policeman, but yet is wealthy enough to finance his daughter's education in the United States and then sponsor her wedding in the same country - ferrying loads of guests abroad (all expense paid) for the jamboree... A civil servant that earns a pittance as salary!

Who has "investigated" the wealth of these kinds of characters? Nobody! Because someone has a prestigious sounding occupation, the daft Nigerian society assumes that he or she must be legit, even if his lawful earnings fall far short of his lifestyle. Oh, he is a retired police commissioner, so that's why he owns a three star star hotel and is a very wealthy man. Oh, he is a former permanent secretary, so don't wonder how come he is a billionaire. Oh he is a banker, worked in this or that so-called establishment, so he is/was "gainfully employed" enough to own assets in multi millions and billions. On salary, allowances and entitlements of how much exactly? Who has asked questions about the disparity between occupational income and wealth for these kinds of characters?

Yet you have the audacity to question the income of totally self-declared, self-employed, and self-made entrepreneurs who refuse to be held down by Nigerian society's artificial shackles constructed to ensure mass immiseration, and are making a way for themselves, all by themselves - without ever having been arrested for a felony.

The hypocrisy in Nigeria stinks to high heavens.

But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

If all churches in the East are to adopt a policy of collecting money from only legitimate worshippers, many of them will close down. To them money is first. Kidnapping, drugs, yahoo is none of their business. Just make some money.

I beg to disagree with my lord bishop, if someone with a questionable source of wealth comes to donate hugely to the church , the onus lies on the church to do a thorough background check on the individual before accepting such Greek gifts. The church should serve as the epicenter of morality and should not out of greed and love for money be in a haste to collect gifts from individuals with questionable source of wealth. This ozubulu incident should be an eye opener for the church .

I don't think its church duty to investigate people's source of income. Neither its the church duty to refuse money based on hearsay. Do the church know if the sinner is making sacrifice for his sin?

However, its the church duty to preach fiercely against ill gotten wealth. Or more so to deliberate its teaching on heavenly race rather than on prosperity. And the holy Roman Catholic Church is a church I respect on this. So the Bishop is right.

No single religion that has not mistakenly taken money from dubious people. Show me one and I will tell u DAT u a liar. Go to the north and see the number of mosques erected by corupt politicians.

One message I want to deliver to all is DAT no any number of mosques or churches you built with your I'll wealth will make u escape judgement. QED

If they had shot dead the person who receive the church on behalf of the Catholic Church and the Bishop who commissioned the building, the Catholic Church would have started checking sourced of gifts n funds.

The Church in Nigeria is the single largest recipient of proceeds of crimes.

When Pastors and Trustees of these Incorporated crooks start going to prison, they'll change.

The age of Methuselah has nothing to do with the wisdom of Solomon. The fact that the Catholic Church is old doesn't mean it's infallible.

If age were a determinant, Prostitution is older than the Catholic Church, has been in existence for ages, has more patrons than the Catholic Church.

Yet, this doesn't make prostitution right.

The truth is that the Catholic Church goofed big time on this one and the Bishop just made a complete fool of himself.

The Pope usually issues statements when Churches are attacked across the world. Why has he failed to comment on this?

Just as was done in Ahiara Diocese of Mbaise, our brethren across the Niger in Nnewi Diocese have embarrassed the Holy Father once again.
