ASUU Indefinite Strike: Any Hope For The Undergraduates? by Fela40: 12:03pm On Aug 15, 2017
This morning I woke up to the sad news that the body governing universities in Nigeria has gone on an indefinite strike. The first thing that ran through my mind was: "What happens to my younger ones still in school?"

I remembered that the last indefinite strike lasted about 7 months and I almost broke down in tears. Questions upon questions ran through my mind.

Is this the way they are treating the leaders of tomorrow in Nigeria?

What will be the fate of the students?

What next for them?

Any hope at all?

I pondered through all these till I went on Nairaland Front Page to check-up on any available news concerning the strike. Lo and behold I found something that even caught my attention as a young working Nigerian.

The CEO of Hotels.ng was soliciting for interns from students on strike.

"What a chance!!!" I yelled. I quickly called home to ask my younger one if she was interested in the deal, after all I could house her in Lagos. She replied thus "what is coding". I became so weak that I had to just terminate the call and bid her good-luck with her strike issues.

Here is my message to all students on strike:

"While others see this strike as a setback, the ambitious ones will tap from the opportunity it presents." I don't want to start telling you the benefits of acquiring a skill during this period and the impact it will make in your life in the long run.

I will quote the CEO of Hotels.ng "Students with special coding skills will be housed specially." What other skill can give you such a rare privilege? Several times we have employed exceptional interns in my firm; and I tell you that they earn more than some average Nigerian workers.

Before you start thinking about how to wait and enjoy at home till the strike is called off, see this as a blessing in disguise. Stand up from complaining, inform your parents that you are going to pick up a skill even before the strike is called off and get down to business.

Any Hope for The Nigerian Undergraduate? YES THERE IS HOPE!!

He who has an ear, let me hear what FELA is saying this afternoon.

When I see posts like this, it gladdens my heart. What will it take a student to just acquire a skill and get equipped for the future?

The future is gearing towards ICT and so many are still blind to see it. It is not about the money now.

If your 5 years and thousand of Naira you spent in the university with plenty strikes can't guarantee you a job, what do you have to lose by learning an ICT course that guarantees you a job?

We at IIHT in Lagos are passionate about you and would love you to be part of us too. Thanks.

Now you are at home, did you collect your school fees from your university?

Are they giving you a refund?

Do they guarantee you a job when you are done with school?

It is your choice to make dear. Goodluck with anyone you choose.

where will i get 55k for hairstyling training

That is now the issue. Bookmark this post and keep, you might look back and wished you never said so.

I see lot's of students who knew what they did to learn courses at our institute. One of them was picked up by a popular bank, and today he studies and work with the back as a Network Administrator.

Imagine if he made this statement you made.

Think of the future tho.

a job of 15k sounds good now. When school resumes, you leave the job. After graduating, what happens?

Go back to the 15k job or start hustling for another job?

D minimum this strike will last is 6 months but it will certainly be more given the paucity of fund at FG disposal.

Undergraduates shld learn a skill or a trader after all they won't get job immediately they graduate. They all shld seize the opportunity n learn sth to aid survival in future.

Of course, there is hope. The Greed of ASUU leaders will make them cave in. But sha to all undergraduates out there, try to get a job if you can find one.

cheesy

I escaped this strike by whiskers; concluded my final year exams on the 9th. Though the only setback I see in this is the area of my project defense.

Anyways, undergraduates should equip themselves with other forms of education (online, offline, skill acquisition.........)

Nigerian varsities are mere geographic school blocks.
