Only within last Week did kogi state university chapter of ASUU resume from their strike which started on Feb 5 2017, now a nationwide strike has been declared.
Over the duration of our strike it was becoming a thing of worry to us as National ASUU folded their arms and watched in anticipation the movie shoot that was going on in Kogi State University forgetting that it was the welfare of their members that was the bowl of contention here. The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) which was supposed to be the source of KSU STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT's (SUG) strength turned our plight to a source of free fund as they left Our young SUG president Phillips Omepa to fight his own battles himself only with his counterparts in kogi here to fight the Almighty Kogi State Government and ASUU. A war that that seemed to have been lost from the very beginning.
It started looking to us like Omepa Phillips was incompetent but nooo, how long would he organise protests that would only lead to his students being shot teargas canons, beating, battering and even arrest by police officers that were supposedly paid to protect us. Even soldiers flogged us like their children were not part of us, maybe they forgot the children of the man that gave them the orders to treat us like that were schooling at Harvard university Cambridge, a prestigious school in the white mans land.
The national assembly had forsaken us and even the Kogi state house of Assembly just behaved like it was kano state university that was on strike and not theirs they even passed a vote of confidence in the state Governor suspending whoever dared show sympathy for us.
In the long run Kogi State activists like Usman Okai Austin who dared to speak up for us were arrested. Yet National Activists kept quite and all KSU students could do for him was rant on facebook. to us the battle was lost already our Phillips omepa could not just tell us directly but he too seemed to have given up leading to the emotional resignation of cosmos ogiri the SUG PRO 1 and even the suspension of omepa Phillips himself and appointment of Anthony Edogbo his vice as acting which took the intervention of the schools VC to revert. Even the efforts of The kogi state NANS JCC chairman yielded no profits.
We were left to our faith even the national dailies did not tell the world of our stay at home instead they stirred propaganda against our Overpowered SUG.
All hope was lost till about two months later when our Governor took the bold step of proscribing ASUU KSU and threatening to sack lecturers that refused to resume leading to their forceful resumption and his advertising of vacancy to replace those that won't resume.
Just a week later ASUU national is going on strike. And am sure NLC,ASUP and others will watch as if nothing is happening.
Remember the southsouth and southwest did not talk when boko haram started till they started blowing Abuja and threats of a Lagos blast came in.
Till the Hausa man starts seeing the problem of the Igbo man as his problem and the Yoruba man starts seeing the problem of the Igala man as his own. A better Nigeria will only be a figment of our imagination.
Our I don't care attitude is becoming to yield negative results and I think its time to go en masse and ask our leaders questions. I believe they should be accountable to us.
Tomorrow it might become a national problem, just like boko haram, corruption, Fulani herdsmen and ASUU strike.tomorrow it might be me or you.
